The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution apologizing for slavery and racial segregation in the U.S. and sent the measure to the House.

Democrat Tom Harkin first introduced the measure years ago but wanted it passed Thursday on the eve of Juneteenth, June 19, a day of celebration commemorating the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the release of African Americans from slavery. He said the House is to take it up soon and that a formal celebration will be held next month.

Juneteenth Day events are held in communities around the U.S. to commemorate the day in 1865 when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, to announce the Civil War was over and that slaves were free.

The Senate has passed such nonbinding but highly symbolic resolutions before, apologizing for such things as the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

The resolution passed Thursday includes a disclaimer saying that nothing in it supports or authorizes reparations by the United States.

  • Uh???? How many times are they going to apologize! Isn't it funny that's all they can do! Imagine being stolen from your home, placed on a ship like an animal, and taken to an unknown land to perform degrading services for others! Are we still 4 centuries deep in Cotton money?
  • they can apologize all they want to, when are they going to do something about it. What about all the land that was stolen & strip from black ppl. there going to have to do a little better than that!
  • Watch the full introduction to the resolution here. Powerful stuff: http://www.thegrio.com/2009/06/us-senate-votes-unanimously-to-apologize-for-slavery-and-segregation.php

    • excuse u. there is no need for name calling. and that is offensive. calm down
  • Im glad i dont have to pay taxes on my income. I wouldnt want a single penny going to someone that hasnt earned it. Im sorry but my family moved here from Ireland in 1912 and I could care less about Slavery so dont apologize for me.
  • YES INDEED, The healing has began...not yet there is a need to put the word to action. Congress can not just apologize, there is a need to correct the history of the United States of American in terms of the African-American involvement in the making of the wealth of this country. In terms of the social impact of slavery on black people and further more, allowed every single African-American be proud of his origin and be FREE like the Irish, German and everybody else... You got to live your African ATTITUDES...

WE RUNNING sh*t HOLLLLAAA OBAMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE PAST IF THEYY REALLY FEEL THAT BAD THEN SEND ME A MUTHAfu*CKIN CHECK THEN I WILL FORGET ABOUT ALL THat sh*t
    • Because you cannot begin to positively control your future if you don't first understand and accept your true past.... for too long in America Black people's past has simply been a lie.....
  • Well, it's good that the apology has been announced but this is definately not enough. Blacks need concrete, positive and effective outreach from the American Government to really atone for the damage that slavery caused not only past slaves but also the decendents of slaves who continue to struggle today specifically because of those atrocities...
  • sorry isnt going to change what happened to our ancestors. its not even close to enuff.
  • for some reason this doesnt make any difference to me. Its long over due....way too late. SMH
  • immediately after passing this apology, the Senate approved by a 1-0 vote (with 99 Senators abstaining) a resolution accepting their apology.
  • Sorry Russel and GG community for not being active on here but that will change. My thoughts on this is why wait so long to pass this " Oh i forgot we have a black president", and some folks up there in the House wants to say they done something or want something done for this. Now this is the deep part, We voted some people in office over the past years that are from our race why is it that they did'nt push very very hard for this but are pushing for this new radio tax bill that will take less from our music enjoyment while listening to radio. Makes u think $$$$$$$$$ dont it.

Happy Fathers Day Russ,Rev and the GG community
  • Every race that was every done wrong by the US was paid reperations!!!!! Except for the Africans who built this coutry and the Native Americans the land was taken from. No your history and read books!!!!!!!
