Did Michael Jackson Doom Iran?

“Did Michael Jackson Doom Iran,” is the title of a just published article on The Daily Beast by Benjamin Sarlin.  Sarlin refers to the growing concern among those in the national security community that the coverage surrounding the untimely and tragic death of the King of Pop (paired with coverage surrounding Mark Sanford’s affair and Farrah Fawcett’s death) will inevitably dominate the media’s attention in the days to come.  Given the restrictions placed on Journalists in Iran, and our reliance on twitter and facebook for information, the thinking goes that there simply won’t be time to adequately cover the uprising in a way that pressures the Iranian regime to comply with the growing demand to stop the violence.  The thinking goes that collectively, we lack the patience and attention span to deal with so much tragedy, at once.

So I pose the question, did Michael Jackson just doom Iran?

The sentiment seems harsh, and insensitive—yet—there is truth in the notion that celebrity often does trump reality…when we let it.

Jackson was the King of Pop, and while his life was comprised of trials and turmoil, his legacy is in his music, and it is there where we saw an awareness that went beyond his celebrity and instead focused on people, on the condition of humanity.  While we grieve and reflect on his life, we must remember that we continue.  With each day that passes, we might insist that the best way to pay tribute to our fallen icon is by living out his declaration that it us who must heal the world.

It is the most poetic way to pay tribute to the man who moon walked through the pages of history, by ensuring that his exit, serves as a reminder of our potential.

While Michael Jackson is no longer with us, this request is, and so in the days to come, take a moment to talk about, think about, read about, those who are trying to heal their reality in Iran.

Michael Jackson did not doom them, long ago; he encouraged us to help them.

“For you and for me and the entire Universe.”

  • No I'm optimistic about gettting support for sanctions on Iran I actually think Michael Jackson and I'm sorry it happened to him got less media coverage then I would've expected if you told me 10 years ago that this is how much media coverage Michael Jackson getting a pain killer and having that happen to him got I would've said, "You mean that happened to Michael Jackson and people are talking about other things?" I was amazed there wasn't more media coverage of Michael Jackson

Eventhough I remember watching Thriller as a kid I didn't post anything on my myspace page after it happened because everyone else was and I wanted to be sincere it seemed sort of fake and I felt bad he was someone I liked as a kid but by the early 90's Michael himself talked about how he was having emotional problems and I wanted to remember Michael Jackson how he used to be up until the early 90's I felt bad about how Michael Jackson got at the end of his life I bought "Man in the Mirror",on ITunes the day I heard what happened I was sort of amazed

Michael Jackson the whole thing with this Conrad Murray guy was so strange

So I don't think Michael overshadowed Iran enough people know about the situation that we can get support for sanctions yeah they had the service at The Staples Center but not as many people were talking about it as I would've expected
  • If the Iranian Revolution is REAL, no amount of Media attention or lack there of, will stop the People from taking to the streets and demanding change. The Civil Rights Movement went on for a very long time before The American media began to give it its due coverage. Early on the Media tried to downplay the demands of Black Americans as being nothing more than noise and protests from a few malcontents, rabble rousers, & troublemakers. Not until young white freedom riders began to die did the media take the movement seriously. Iranians just need to keep fighting for change and freedom. Their demands will eventually be heard. As far as Michael dooming the Iranians, well that's just absurd. His song Man in the Mirror should be an inspiration to the Iranian people to continue their Fight for Freedom and Democracy!
  • I somewhat agree with this post, it's not just Micheal if you think about it, it's when anything is vitally wrong the media about-face the news in a different direction to sooth over Americans by forgetting a bigger worry for something people can relate to. Jackson will be truly missed, but a statement was made about the Iranians. They will be there today tomorrow and so forth, not so true especially when they are getting killed, we as well could leave this earth today, tomorrow and so forth. When they get through tearing their own country up who is it y'all think they will try to come for...US, y'all see what Korea is trying to do. So yes an icon has left us, but we do have to press on...Same goes when a family member or anyone that is close to us dies.
  • Sooo. I'm gonna agree with "Tha Truth" on this one. If can't mourn for our own people who can we mourn for. How can you say we need to turn our attention away from someone who most of this country, I must correct and say world, has grown up with. MJ has inspired us all to become better people. To be not childish but child-like. This problem in Iran is gonna be here today, tomorrow and the next day. But the time to mourn a truly great human being; not just a music entertainer, IS TODAY! So take some time from all of this depressing stuff that is going on in other countries, and pay your respects.
    • Honest T, I actually agree with you. You're right, Iran will be there tomorrow, the next day, weeks from now... I'm not saying we should change the subject, but that as we mourn,in the days and years to come, we might pay tribute to the man who, like you said, encouraged us to "be not childish but child-like" by working to fulfill the vision that he articulated in his music while believing that we actually have the capacity to make a difference. He sure did.
  • GG I can't believe u all posted this. WHO CARES ABOUT IRAN? That's the problem w/ America we are always sticking are noses in other countries business. We don't have the money to keep concerning ourselves w/ the Middle East. I love Michael Jackson. F**K the MEDIA.
