Russell's Open Letter To The NYC Mayor: Remember the Poor

Dear My Friend, Mayor Bloomberg,

In the summertime, as a child, I used to play in the streets of Hollis, Queens.  As we played, there were always kids hanging out on the corner.  Most of those kids that stood on that street corner of Hollis and 205th either died or went to jail.  So, yesterday I was looking forward to joining you at the press conference announcing the expansion of New York City’s Summer Streets program, because I know that good programs will keep kids playing in the streets, rather than standing on the corner.

As I stood there and listened to all of the city officials, including you, tout the various programs of Summer Streets, I realized that we should be spending as much energy on programs for the poor and disenfranchised as we do on the programs on Park Avenue and in other affluent neighborhoods in the city.  I think it is wonderful that the city will be closing streets throughout all five boroughs during the summer; however we need to make sure that the people who live in the poorer communities have free programs as well.  We also need to make sure that the information to participate is easily accessible for those communities.  We respect the city’s interest in servicing the tourists and more affluent New Yorkers and we recognize these programs, in some way, benefit the entire city.  However, frankly speaking, the poor do not benefit enough.

With the horrific economic conditions that have devastated our communities, we all know that times are tough.  However, during these tough times we would expect our leaders to give those who need a hand, two hands.  I have been a friend and supporter for many years, and will always give you credit for the excellent job you have done in areas like education and the environment.  As your friend, I urge you to create more and enhance the existing programs that you have already created for those who are suffering in poverty.  Let's make sure that we do not create two New York Cities; one for those with privilege and access and one for those who are living in struggle.

During this long, hot summer, we need more programs that will keep our young people from literally killing each other.  Just last week, I met with the leaders of the Bury Da Beef coalition who asked for my assistance to stop an escalating street war that is going on right now in my old neighborhood in Queens.  They are fearful that with the summer in full swing, the violence will not stop across the city.  And without anything for the kids to do, I am sorry to say, it definitely won’t.  As we all don’t want more trouble in our city, I strongly recommend that the city makes more of a commitment to support programs that are community based and community-run, like Bury Da Beef, LIFE Camp or Man Up, amongst many, many others.

Lastly, let us be honest, that if we do not help those who are suffering in poverty, they will eventually rise up and put many elected officials on the same unemployment line as they are on now.

Your Friend,
Russell Simmons

  • I can't believe Bloomberg wants to cut programs for kids this is crazy while Bloomberg calls for cutting afterschool programs in NewYork city I guess because of budget or financial problems here in Chicago they are putting a tax on soft drinks Coca-Cola,Sprite Grocery items supposedly to fund a public works project since Chicago's also in debt

Before the 1990's any normal city would keep the afterschool programs or the food prices down and just run a deficit until the economy picks up people think because Clinton did it during a good economy that the government is like a private company and they have to balance the books at all costs that's not true

In the worst economy since the Great Depression everything we did in the 90's is history fund the programs for kids in NYC don't tax food in Chicago it doesn't matter if you run a deficit NYC is the largest city in America because the Federal Government needs the tax money from a prosperous NYC if Bloomberg runs a huge debt to fund programs for kids 3 years from now or 5 years from now Bloomberg or whoever the Mayor is will get a bailout anyway

Chicago will get something if we run a deficit by not taxing food America the I.R.S.can't lose the revenue from the Third largest city if it's prosperous has everyone forgotten how to be a politicanLOL Don't balance your budget on your own citizens if you run a debt since the I.R.S. gets money when you do well you'll get a bailout or a loan from the Federal Government

  • Hello mr.simmons, i read your tweet the other day about how we need housing. Housing in ny is getting so ridiculous. I am a stay at home mom and my husband busts his butt everyday driving taxi in the city. Now our income is about 30,000 total. To qualify for an apt. even in the hood they want at least 50,000 of household income.Ridiculous. Now there is sec8 that we were certified for but when I call them they say "the city has no money to give anybody a voucher". THE CITY HAS NO MONEY. I JUST DONT GET IT. AGAIN RIDICULOUS. WHATS UP BLOOMBERG??
  • Hello, I saw an article on the charity work by Russell Simmons. I was impressed by his volunteer contributions to stop child abuse. I was abused badly as a child and nearly killed at age 5 by a drunk old man. I am not African American, but I am Apache Indian from Arizona. I saw all the angry blogs about Russell and his dating social life. As a Native American, I know there is a lot of resentment to interracial dating. The highest frequency occurs among Native Americans - most are part white at this point. My view is that Russell's dating life is none of my business. What matters is that he cares about children. Best regards on the charity work.

  • No doubt Mr. Simmons. I usually always base my choice for any political office, especially president or governor, on which candidate will do more for the citizens at the bottom, the poorest of the poor, the ones who truly need it most. No matter how succesful i become and how rich i get, i will always base it on that aspect first. Not who will save me the most money when it comes to taxes but who will help the most needy. In order to fix things up economically in this country i believe it makes total sense to work from the bottom up. Why help the rich get richer while the poor in our country are still killing each other for grocery money? You can't begin to build a solid foundation on cratered terrain. You have to fill the holes first... www.myspace.com/capicuprobeatz
