Hello Everyone!

So today I woke up thinking about Dan Choi. I know a lot of you probably don't know who he is, so I just wanted to write a little blog to keep you all updated on things! Dan Choi  is considered a hero to many of us in the human rights movement.  Why? Not just because he went to West Point, or served a tour in Iraq, but because he is a BRAVE man who truly stands up for what he believes in, and as you all know by now, I highly admire people who like to break barriers and speak their minds!

On national television he PROUDLY told the world that he was a GAY soldier. *Standing Ovation*  But then soon after he announced that he was GAY,  the army IMMEDIATELY gave him the boot! Now keep in mind, this is a man who proudly enlisted himself in the army, possibly endangering his own life, just so that he could help protect our country and be a PROUD SOLDIER TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! For him to get the boot just because of what gender he chooses to LOVE is absolutely RIDICULOUS to me! HORRID!  Unfortunately, he isn't the first to be discriminated against, and unless President Obama acts fast, and keeps his campaign promise to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy" in the military, he will not be the last!

Being an openly bisexual woman myself and having a lot of close gay friends, I have always HATED that policy, which pretty much tells people that in order to serve our country, you have to live in secret.  You can't openly embrace the person you love or tell others about them.  What kind of message does that send? Well, clearly its one of shame. Very shameful and quite sad.

Think about it,  this outmoded policy sends a horrible message to young people, straight or gay, that the military is trying to recruit. It tells them that the military is an intolerant place that does not value  diversity, fairness, and equality. More than 12,500 gay and lesbian soldiers have been discharged since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" began in 1993. The soldiers were brave enough to lay their lives on the  line to protect the country they love, and for all of us here in America, but they were not good enough live openly and proudly as they are.  The message that this sends, is that the military sees no problem with discrimination- and how is that "American" exactly? This country is supposed to be all about "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL" So they should honor that commandment!  We have come a long way, fighting for equal rights so why stop now?

So now I am looking to our superhero President to do what is right! President Obama says that he will REPEAL the DADT policy, but so far, we don't have a date as of yet.....all we have is just a campaign promise that really gave us all hope during that time that a change was coming!  We shall all be free!  I for one, trust the words of our President. I trust that he will continue to fight for our rights from within the White House walls just like he promised he would. As a matter of fact, I would like to applaud him for extending partner benefits to federal Gay employees, calling on Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, meeting with Mathew Shephard's mom(the same Lady who turned away Perez Hilton for his recent anti-gay slur) about hate crimes, and repealing the HIV travelers ban...so yes, I will give Obama credit where it is due! Our guy, is on the move and I love him for it.

However, we still need a date Mr. Obama. When will you give us that date to repeal the DADT Policy and continue be the Superhero that you can be! We are here, we are queer, and its about time that the military gets used to it!!!  Discrimination is so 2000 and Late! The time is NOW!!!!!! YES WE CAN, BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN! I hope you get a chance to read this Mr. President! I know you have it in you to be one of the greatest Presidents our time!

Yours Truly,
Ms. Tila Nguyen

  • thanks tila..for those of you who dont know..dan choi is a hero to all closeted gay military personal..i was in the military but discharger but for those who think that "straight ppl do it better"..i was top in my flight in physical fitness, marksmanship, and drill. i was a damn great solider. homosexuals fight a continuous battle with society for generally not being excepted..once you are openly gay, it is not an easy thing to hide again. the military is asking you to hide your true self again. i personaly think that is wrong and commend with the upmost respect dan choi for everything he has done for our country and for the glbt community
  • it shouldnt matter if your gay or not.
if u want to serve your country and stand up for what you belive in then do it with pride and your head high
  • Stop the Non sense the military is not a Democracy..You do what you are told how and when you are told period!anybody thinking of joining might want to remember that fact before signing the contract...And who is this Nasty tramp to take shots at Prez O! Didn't see y'all Barking @ Bush when he was running around FCKing everything up.... OH but thats it wait till the Blackman get there and start with the B/S!
  • i think your right people should come out and say and do as they feel there not dishonoring the country or there uniform just because they love a person whom society does not agree or the military does not either. it shouldnt matter they put them selves out there to take a bullet a bomb or a missle aboard a sub or a ship and this is how our country repays them how double standard and messed up is that it clearly states in the constitution we dont dicriminate against sex national origin, handicap, religion etc etc. so i hope the president will read this and keep his promise like he said. if not he whould be another one that be full of lies for making this country believe that change will come which so far i have not seen any well sorry other than being the first president to be of difrent origin which hey i nominate him for that. but i sure do hope he keeps what he says we entered a new millenium society the military and the world just needs to get over it. SHOW YOUR PRIDE AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. DONT EVER LET ANYONE OF YOU TELL YOU DIFFRENT THAT IS WRONG OR WHAT EVER.
  • i agree with Darkangel41. god loves us all. and everybody is entilted to their own opinion, and you just saying yours...i dont know why people are freaking out on you, and calling you nasty things just because your saying your opinion.

    i think its a good letter : )
  • i think you have a point all people should be respected
  • I would laugh at the day to see a straight get harrassed the same way a homosexual gets harrassed constantly on a daily basis. Hmmm wouldn't that be interesting to put the shoe on the other foot and let them feel what we feel. it's not fun. but It would definitely put a spin on things and maybe might bring some compassion. wouldn't ya think?
  • Tila- I commend you for standing up for gay rights! as for the Haters- you're entitled your opinions and that's fine. we welcome all dissension. You know why? I'll tell ya. Because I like to see you huff and puff in disgust. Like kronky said: God made us ALL HIS children, bisexual, transgendered, homosexual and yes even straight too. And he LOVES ALL OF US. He just can't stand the sin. That's all. WE ALL ARE GOING TO BE JUDGED FOR OUR ACTIONS NOT JUST HOMOSEXUALS BUT ALL PEOPLE> WATCH what you say and do because you are being watched by GOD, himself. I suggest you bible thumping rednecks read this chapter in your bible before judging or discriminating or hating on a homosexual. Matthew 7 it's about equality. it's about freedom of choice in this country. freedom to choose who you love. any straight person ever have that problem where told hey you're not allowed to love your partner because of this certain rule and regulation? no, you don't have that problem do you? never in your life had to be faced with it. so therefore, you have no idea what it's like nor would you understand because you've never had to dealt with it. So yeah, keep on hating and pdiscriminating and being prejudice because someone is different from you, pretty soon what comes goes around. Put that in your thinking cap and smoke it.
  • oooooooooook... i'd rather be a ignorant redneck than a nasty homo... have fun in hell fags! quit bitchin' about everything! why the f*ck are you taking it out on rednecks? lol pathetic!

  • Tila... I commend you on your effort to put equality on all levels of discrimination. I am a straight black man living in the south, so I see mentality that your movement is fighting against every day... but I also see how barriers are being broken one person at a time. Keep using your high profile p*ssy power to break these barriers down! LOL But seriously...The only way to cancel out ignorance is through knowledge and enlightenment...
  • Tina, really enjoyed your article. Very insightful. Dont listen to the hateful words, they are just coming from the tormented minds of jealous people. Stay strong and keep doing your thing!! Much love and respect!
  • you people are hilarious. Let's get something straight, Barack Obama wouldn't help anyone that wasn't black, and Tila Tequila is not a celebrity, she's an ex-porn "co-star" turn reality tv star who tries to rap. The mere fact that you entertain this mind-droning crap is the reason people like her have a career. By the way I'm pretty sure there are lots of soldiers that are gay, but that doesn't change that fact that being gay is being gay. Either way you wish to potray it its disgusting, repulsive, offensive, nasty, and morally wrong. peace
  • Tila...

I love that you are an activist on gay rights, but the military doesnt have the same rules of engagement as the civilian world. Mr. Choi knew this when he raised his hand and took the oath to defend out great country. Just about every regualtion that our military uses, has been implemented because of past experience. Maybe they used to allow homosexuality in the military at one point in time, and someone or some event messed it all up. The military is very cut and dry. Im not saying Mr. Choi is wrong for what he is doing, because he isnt. He is excersizing his right as an american to challenge the governement. BUT, as I stated earlier, the military goes by an aditional set of rules called the UCMJ. Mr. Choi, being an ex-officer, should know this document very well, and should be well versed in it. There are very specific rules and regulations when it comes to homosexuality, so thats why his argument is falling on deaf ears. This is not me hating or being an asshole....im just stating the facts. Tila I am a fan of yours and am truly amazed at what youve accomplished since being a model in 2003. Congratz on all your success and I hope you have many more before you retire from the game...PEACE AND LOVE
  • kay, who ever says gay or bi sexuals suck.. that's bullsh*t.
everyone deserves the right to fight for there Country!
