Hello Everyone!

So today I woke up thinking about Dan Choi. I know a lot of you probably don't know who he is, so I just wanted to write a little blog to keep you all updated on things! Dan Choi  is considered a hero to many of us in the human rights movement.  Why? Not just because he went to West Point, or served a tour in Iraq, but because he is a BRAVE man who truly stands up for what he believes in, and as you all know by now, I highly admire people who like to break barriers and speak their minds!

On national television he PROUDLY told the world that he was a GAY soldier. *Standing Ovation*  But then soon after he announced that he was GAY,  the army IMMEDIATELY gave him the boot! Now keep in mind, this is a man who proudly enlisted himself in the army, possibly endangering his own life, just so that he could help protect our country and be a PROUD SOLDIER TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! For him to get the boot just because of what gender he chooses to LOVE is absolutely RIDICULOUS to me! HORRID!  Unfortunately, he isn't the first to be discriminated against, and unless President Obama acts fast, and keeps his campaign promise to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy" in the military, he will not be the last!

Being an openly bisexual woman myself and having a lot of close gay friends, I have always HATED that policy, which pretty much tells people that in order to serve our country, you have to live in secret.  You can't openly embrace the person you love or tell others about them.  What kind of message does that send? Well, clearly its one of shame. Very shameful and quite sad.

Think about it,  this outmoded policy sends a horrible message to young people, straight or gay, that the military is trying to recruit. It tells them that the military is an intolerant place that does not value  diversity, fairness, and equality. More than 12,500 gay and lesbian soldiers have been discharged since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" began in 1993. The soldiers were brave enough to lay their lives on the  line to protect the country they love, and for all of us here in America, but they were not good enough live openly and proudly as they are.  The message that this sends, is that the military sees no problem with discrimination- and how is that "American" exactly? This country is supposed to be all about "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL" So they should honor that commandment!  We have come a long way, fighting for equal rights so why stop now?

So now I am looking to our superhero President to do what is right! President Obama says that he will REPEAL the DADT policy, but so far, we don't have a date as of yet.....all we have is just a campaign promise that really gave us all hope during that time that a change was coming!  We shall all be free!  I for one, trust the words of our President. I trust that he will continue to fight for our rights from within the White House walls just like he promised he would. As a matter of fact, I would like to applaud him for extending partner benefits to federal Gay employees, calling on Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, meeting with Mathew Shephard's mom(the same Lady who turned away Perez Hilton for his recent anti-gay slur) about hate crimes, and repealing the HIV travelers ban...so yes, I will give Obama credit where it is due! Our guy, is on the move and I love him for it.

However, we still need a date Mr. Obama. When will you give us that date to repeal the DADT Policy and continue be the Superhero that you can be! We are here, we are queer, and its about time that the military gets used to it!!!  Discrimination is so 2000 and Late! The time is NOW!!!!!! YES WE CAN, BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN! I hope you get a chance to read this Mr. President! I know you have it in you to be one of the greatest Presidents our time!

Yours Truly,
Ms. Tila Nguyen

  • This is a good example of the type of things that distract form the real issues.
Not taking anything away from dude, his efforts, or his experience, but right now, at this particular moment in time we have huge issues facing this nation.
Smaller, special-interest issues such as these only serve to distract.
Wake up, pay attention before all that you have been blessed with is gone!
  • I am gay and in the military, and i am sorry, but i really dont understand how people not gay or even in the military are even concerning themselves with the policy. I have been in for quite a few years now, and all of this crap about people being upset about being kicked out for being gay is rediculous 1, they knew the rules coming into it and were given the option to go home. 2, the people i know that were put out either told ther commander or first sergeant they were gay or were just complete idiots in how they conducted themselves. i dont hear anyone crying for the people who were discharged for cheating on their spouses, or because they could not pay their bills, or had and alcohol problem. As for the "reinvented" pic of Iwo Jima above it absolutly DISGUSTS me! To think that some people have the balls to disgrace and taint the memory of all the people who gave their lives that day just so some left wing liberal nut job can try to sell their petty and insignificant thoughts on a policy that does not even concern them, and still feel good about calling themselves Americans is absolutly amazing. We fight for the rights and priveleges that all Americans enjoy, but sometimes i wish we could pick who didnt get to enjoy that, becaause as illustrated above some do not deserve them.
    • The picture of the men hoisting a pride flag (or whatever it's called) is RIDICULOUS!!! It's a complete mockery and you should take it down immediately. That is of the utmost disrespect to ANY servicemember, gay or straight. So Tila, join the effing military then we'll talk....The ones who have the most to say are usually the ones who do the least. I sacrificed 5 years of my life so that a bunch of do nothing liberals can try and take over what we have worked so hard to establish. I'm not anti-gay, but let's not be so distasteful about it all. You don't see me flaunting my straight behavior all over the place. Ughhh!!!
  • Wow 15 thata cool..well follow your heart...and for the people who think they can judge us gays well...not only in the end will we face the wrath of god but so will they..only god has the right to judge..and if he didnt want gays on this earth well there wouldnt be any gays on this earth. ( hellrazar911@yahoo.com )
    • Okay, so here's my thought and my thought only...You dont have to agree. However, we are all entitled to our own thoughts and opinions...I am a female officer in the US Army myself..I know of several homosexual soldiers and I can personally attest to the fact that these soldiers are there there for the exact same reason that any heterosexual soldier is there for..To fight for our rights and protect our beloved country..Not to shop for their next lay.. So for that reason and that reason alone, I believe that they have just as much right to be there than any other person... In the military, we are all soldiers first...Every thing else comes second...This is understood by all... That trust, that I put in my fellow soldiers hands, has got to be total and complete in order to stay alive.. The last thing any one thinks about in a time of war and tragedy is the sexual orientation of the soldier beside or behind them..
    • As far as the religious side of things, I do not agree that if the Lord did not want there to be homosexuals here on Earth, he would not have put them here... You could be in real trouble if you started applying that to things in order redeem your soul.. I am sure that the Lord is horrified with what we humans have done with the gifts he has given us.. We have used the knowledge that we have been given for evil more often than not.. Now I am speaking of the human race in general.. Not each and every person.. There are certainly alot of people that have used their knowledge for good.. Our world is quickly spinning out of control.. There are a lot of more important issues to focus on than that of the civil rights of homosexual people.. What it all boils down to is this.. Come the end of days, EVERYONE will be judged by the only person that has the right to judge.. Until that time, it is the choice of each individual to live their life the way he or she sees fit... Free will was bestowed upon us by the Lord so that we CHOSE how we are to live... He wanted us to CHOSE to love Him as He loves us.. Not be forced to do so.. With that responsiblity comes the burden of consequences.. Do not trouble yourself by judging others because you will surely not like the consequences when your time to be judged comes.. Instead, love your fellow brothers and sisters.. Live your own life how you believe you should live it.. Let others live theirs how they see fit.. If being a homosexual is a sin, than it is forgivable, just as any other sin would be.. There is no sin that keeps you from the Lord's love and forgiveness.. I am not saying that it is in fact a sin.. Only, that if people want to believe that homosexuals go to hell simply for being a homosexual, they are wrong.. All sins are washed away if a person accepts Him as their personal savior and redeemer and ask that their sins be forgiven...
    • We ALL sin, every day of our lives.. No sin is greater than another when asking for forgiveness.. So, to those that are actively discriminating against homosexuals and casting their judgement on them, you are actively sinning yourself! Move on, and please cleanse your own soul lest you want to be sent to the exact place you claim homosexuals are condemned!!
    • My words exactley!
  • seriously people is this what we have come to arguing over comments on gg im not gay but i do believe that every one should be treated equally and have the same rights including gays but as far as the military goes the dadt shouldnot be lifted frankly for the simple reason that there are close minded people in the military and the last thing we needed is thousands of soldiers dying because instead of paying attention they're worried about if their gay partner behind them is staring at their ass but then give credit to the gays in the miliary do we actually think that they are checking out the guy or girl to the left of the when their lives are on the line every single day trust me they have way more important things on theie mind like if they will make it home to see their family also abut sodom and gommorah there is a seperation of church and state so that shouldn't have been brought up i agree with every one we should definetly keep dadt because america is a place where freedom of self will never be possible but i will say this to the gays in the military if they ask do tell
  • Tila will never read this but the fans that support her will so fans this is to you. We in the military work together in VERY close conditions. The last thing I need in a firefight is the guy next to me thinking about how I looked in the shower last night instead of his job. There is no room to be uncomfortable in this line of work. No one in the military cares if your gay, just like no one cares if your a gaunge member, its when you voice it that people care because plain and simple, its against the rules. If people kept their personal lives out of the military, like your taught, this never would have happened. I disagree with you Tila, your an ignorant libral whos "never been there or done that." We dont complain about movie star life, so stray out of ours.
    • I think that you are the ignorant one. Just because the soldier standing next to you happens to have a partner of the same gender does NOT mean that they will be "thinking about how you looked in the shower last night instead of his job." I mean seriously, are you attracted to every woman out there? No you're not. Same thing goes with gays and lesbians, THEY ARE NOT ALL ATTRACTED TO YOU. And whether or not they are open about it, they are still gay. The only ones making it uncomfortable are close-minded individuals like you. You can disagree with the views expressed by Tila, but don't you dare insult her because of your close-minded ignorance.
    • I hate to break it to you but what makes you think we wana think about you...we go to war to protect our country.not to see what the selection of guys are..plus if we wanted to go sex up guys we would hit a bar..not the army..belive it or not but we don't just care about sex..besides gay people don't need to see you naked to size you up..and when your at war you don't have time to think about anything but your mission.so frankly f*cking get over yourself... ( helrazar911@yahoo.com ) e~mail me if you have a problem with that. Ill tell you where you can stick your ideas.
  • You have got to be kidding. Okay, being former military and part of a long military heritage. I can tell you right now he was not kicked out for being Gay. And for the bible thumpers, just so you know it does say God created us in his own image and gave us freedom of choice. If he were pissed at the outcome I am sure he would smite us. Look this is not a religous, racial, or sexuality issue. This is one pissed of PERSON, who found a way to manipulate the media to work for his cause. More power to making your own choice own who you want to be, but PDA(Public Displays of Affection) are also against UCMJ. And I am upset about the Iwo Jima change on this page. My family has served in the World Wars, Vietnam, Desert Storm ... it is offensive. You are certainly allowed to be more original than that but please don't defile something sacred to our country. I support what you are doing but stop arguing and being so violent you think after all these years of violent protesting and realizing by talking things out can things be accomplished. And I hate to tell the people who dropped the ethnicity bomb on this conversation. But I am pretty sure the Indians suffered more than anyone.
    • Actually God does give us a choice and God did destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah because men were laying with men and women were laying with men. A man can not make life with another man same as a women to a women. God tells us to be fruitful and multiply. You can't exactly multiply with the same sex. After Jeses died on the cross for our sins all of our sins are forgiving granted you believe Jesus is the son of God and believes what he did. America is the most evil, messed up country. Dad raping daughters, kids killing parents, Homo's like crazy. Everything is Ass backwards and just wait America's time is coming. In the end times the bible does not even speak of this land.
    • You seem pretty sure that Choi wasn't kicked out for being gay. So tell us Mr. Information, what was he kicked out for? What evidence do you have that he manipulated the media? Do you know him personally? As to your comment about PDA: first of all, I don't think gay soldiers are likely in the habit of talking openly to their straight soldier buddies about their sexual exploits. And I'm pretty sure it's not just because it's against the "rules". However, I happen to have a few straight, male, soldier friends and let me tell you, they don't censor themselves. If it is against the rules for a gay soldier to talk about sex with a man, or a lesbian soldier to talk about sex with a woman (which I'm sure would get no complaints from the straight males), it should also be against the rules for EVERYONE to talk about ANY sexual or romantic exploits. As to your comment about the Indians having it the worst, I think you're right. I don't think I've ever heard anyone compare the horrible struggles WE put them through to the LBGTQ rights movement. And I do believe we call them NATIVE AMERICANS now.
    • Sorry Shannon about the Indian word but as far as my ancestors and my grandparents are concerned we are Indian. We were here first so the term Native American offends me a little. And I am not sure why everyone is assuming Choi was kicked out because he is gay, and is there a politically correct term for gay yet? Because apparently there is a politically correct term for everything today. I wouldn't want to offend anyone. And for your information, as a single father of two wonderful boys, not every guy is into two women. I would think that your statement was pretty much labeling the straight males unfairly. And people need to stop looking at President Obama as Black or part White part Black. He is just a man. It is great that he was elected to office what a historical moment. But, women have had it just as hard. If I remember my history correctly, (African Americans) were allowed to vote before women. So when an Indian, (My right to call myself this) or a woman is elected to office then we can all cheer as the world will truly be changing for the better.
    • for one the proper term is indigenous people not Native Amerians or Indains so you people need too get it right both are in a way a disgrace to our people but the whites use these terms anyways
  • I'm literally shaking my head in disgrace to all of the ridiculous comments on here. Tila you are doing an amazing job; keep it up. (Even though I am straight i stand up for gay rights; I believe no matter who you are we are should be treated the same.)
  • You know, Black people have taken a collective "back seat" when it comes to forcing the President to address the continued institutionalized racism in this country simply because this country is in hot water right about now and gays in the military are the least of our problems.

Everybody's trying to get out of wars and gays are trying to stay in it.

Politics of distractions this is. Have at it, that's how we ended up in Iraq in the first place.
    • Screw blacks and f*ck gay people
  • Oh come on TIla. This is f*cking stupid and you know it.
  • just like any job n america one sud have nothing 2 do with the other. this issue & the issue of holder & the bush administration will make Prez. O a one term prez. NO HES NOT SUPERMAN. this is a guy whom got problems with his african ppl. was not wanted by his black american pple. & was very little wanted by his white american side. this is a man tht cnt change alot b-cause the good old boy system didnt even want him. if he goes 2 far the military might just assinate him as they did kennedy so we the people sud realize its up 2 us. find a gr8 gay male or female 2 replace him n 2012 or 2016 ...WE THE PPLE HAVE THE POWER...
    • Are you kidding me? If you're going to come on here and talking your stuff maybe you should not use numbers to complete words or leave out letters. You're just making yourself look ignorant. And maybe you should get your facts straight before spouting crap about how the military killed President Kennedy.
    • the military didn't assistinate kennedy
  • It should stay the way it is. No gays in the military.
  • WHAT A FAGG
  • The MAN has control and it has nothing to do with your faith, beliefs or life! PLEASE WAKE UP!

    Watch and learn.... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-594683847743189197
  • Okay.. I am a Veteran so I know my UCMJ(Uniform Code of Military Justice) And i think people who haven't served in the Military Need to Just Research the Don't ask, Don't Tell Policy. Bill Clinton Put that into place to Allow Gays/Lesbian to serve in the Military, Whereas before 1993, there were none allowed to serve.. So to all those people who are saying this Guy got kicked out, Like SSG mentioned, Where are his Discharge Documents that will state the reason under UCMJ actions. I can Only Imagine that as ARMY GI JANE mentioned, this may start another issue that at this time, the military doesnt need. People who join the military should know as much as they need to know, Gay/Lesbian or Straight. Like if you get hired to work for a company, you wanna know something about them before you become an employee. There have been Gay/Lesbian in the military for years and years. Why didn't somebody get on Bill Clinton about this DADT policy when he first set it into play? Now i don't have anything against Gay/Lesbian People, But to be frank, This lifestyle is nothing more than a Privilege because its UNNATURAL! SO the "Rights" that you have already fought for, you should be happy that those were put in to play. And i hate when people do this, but compare being gay/lesbian to being a different race. It took black people/African American how many years to get our rights(and we still don't have all of them)? I don't even wanna hear about people comparing us having the right to live v. Someones Sexual Preference?(ARE YOU f*cking KIDDING ME) Think "outside the box" on that one. So I'm not a "Basher" but i think we all need to look at this with Common Sense(which obviously is one of the things we've lost on this country) and Then make the right decision. I hope the right and fair decision is made.
    • I think you said it best!! I feel that unless you have been in the military and really know what it is like, keep your mouth shut! Thank You for your comment. USMC
    • you know there is no law protecting gays and lesbians against discrimination?? you say we cant be compared to a race, that's true because race is protected, your sex is protected, your sexuality is protected but ours is not!! seriously think about it... how would you feel if you were told you couldn't marry the love of your life?? how would you feel if you were told that you can have some of the rights as other people?? people like you who say that they don't hate homosexuals or they aren't a "basher" but they dont want us to have the same rights as you just piss me off! you are just being ignorant and if you are black you should know how it is to be looked down on and how your people in the past were treated because of WHO THEY ARE!!!! so all you people who sit here and talk sh*t about us try putting yourself in our shoes! i dare you to try and live one day in the life we live because you are so close minded you wouldn't last 1 hour!! you have no clue what it is like to wake up in our lives everyday so dont act like you do! oh and there is nothing UNNATURAL about us and no it is NOT a choice we just made one day!! I chose to be gay the same day you chose be straight!! and maybe this will make you realize something... God will judge you for hating before he judges me for loving!
    • I think that you said it the best! I'm not gay i'm straight but I support gay rights! its not fair that race is protected but your guys sexuality isnt. Its just not right at all.
  • Thanks, Tila. This is a great blog. Homosexual citizens should have had the same rights as heterosexuals years ago. Being discriminated against based on the person you love makes no sense at all, and apparently all the people who disagree with you on this have no sense either. If gays are given their well-deserved rights in my lifetime, it may restore my faith in humanity, at least a teeny bit. Keep fighting! I will too.
