Hello Everyone!

So today I woke up thinking about Dan Choi. I know a lot of you probably don't know who he is, so I just wanted to write a little blog to keep you all updated on things! Dan Choi  is considered a hero to many of us in the human rights movement.  Why? Not just because he went to West Point, or served a tour in Iraq, but because he is a BRAVE man who truly stands up for what he believes in, and as you all know by now, I highly admire people who like to break barriers and speak their minds!

On national television he PROUDLY told the world that he was a GAY soldier. *Standing Ovation*  But then soon after he announced that he was GAY,  the army IMMEDIATELY gave him the boot! Now keep in mind, this is a man who proudly enlisted himself in the army, possibly endangering his own life, just so that he could help protect our country and be a PROUD SOLDIER TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! For him to get the boot just because of what gender he chooses to LOVE is absolutely RIDICULOUS to me! HORRID!  Unfortunately, he isn't the first to be discriminated against, and unless President Obama acts fast, and keeps his campaign promise to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy" in the military, he will not be the last!

Being an openly bisexual woman myself and having a lot of close gay friends, I have always HATED that policy, which pretty much tells people that in order to serve our country, you have to live in secret.  You can't openly embrace the person you love or tell others about them.  What kind of message does that send? Well, clearly its one of shame. Very shameful and quite sad.

Think about it,  this outmoded policy sends a horrible message to young people, straight or gay, that the military is trying to recruit. It tells them that the military is an intolerant place that does not value  diversity, fairness, and equality. More than 12,500 gay and lesbian soldiers have been discharged since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" began in 1993. The soldiers were brave enough to lay their lives on the  line to protect the country they love, and for all of us here in America, but they were not good enough live openly and proudly as they are.  The message that this sends, is that the military sees no problem with discrimination- and how is that "American" exactly? This country is supposed to be all about "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL" So they should honor that commandment!  We have come a long way, fighting for equal rights so why stop now?

So now I am looking to our superhero President to do what is right! President Obama says that he will REPEAL the DADT policy, but so far, we don't have a date as of yet.....all we have is just a campaign promise that really gave us all hope during that time that a change was coming!  We shall all be free!  I for one, trust the words of our President. I trust that he will continue to fight for our rights from within the White House walls just like he promised he would. As a matter of fact, I would like to applaud him for extending partner benefits to federal Gay employees, calling on Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, meeting with Mathew Shephard's mom(the same Lady who turned away Perez Hilton for his recent anti-gay slur) about hate crimes, and repealing the HIV travelers ban...so yes, I will give Obama credit where it is due! Our guy, is on the move and I love him for it.

However, we still need a date Mr. Obama. When will you give us that date to repeal the DADT Policy and continue be the Superhero that you can be! We are here, we are queer, and its about time that the military gets used to it!!!  Discrimination is so 2000 and Late! The time is NOW!!!!!! YES WE CAN, BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN! I hope you get a chance to read this Mr. President! I know you have it in you to be one of the greatest Presidents our time!

Yours Truly,
Ms. Tila Nguyen

  • Tila Tequila isn't even a lesbian or bi or whatever she claims to be. She just picks whatever sexuality is popular this week.

f*ck her and f*ck all of you gays!!
    • WOW WELL f*ck YOU TOO HAHA
  • hey you guys im straight and serescly i have no problem with anybody being gay im only 15 and seeing other people treating people like this is horrable i always wanted to go in to the air force but this just makes me think twice. i love the united states of america ,but to be honest i dont think is very united

    thanks Gilberto Espinoza
  • im lesbian, and im 16
i can not believe that there are still people in todays world that are so mean and hateful, they wont let gays marry, not letting them serve for their country is not only going against our democratic values but it is also just stupid.
i mean really, just grow up and except it. its a new age, times have changed.
    i agree with you 100% :D
    • f*ck you, you dumb b*tch.
    • Man f*ck U! i think tila is right. even though im not gay i think ppl should have equal opportunity gay lesbien or straight. i bet we could be successful in every war we have if they let more ppl gay or lesbien in the army. now takin it frm u ur straight right? ok. now wat if gay ppl were discriminating against u cuase ur straight. thnk of it if u were gay even though ur not.

    • Shut the f*ck up, you dumb c*nt.
    • You are one close minded, immature SOB. You obviously have no life seeing as you are wasting your time bashing others points of view.
  • You gotta be kidding me, this guy deserved to get the boot...$hit, this dudes a fag, period... and using the Military to try to make people look at being gay as being alright is ridicolous. Anybody that wants to use the Military as a stepping stone for Homo-Rights deserves the boot, period. When will all of the gays and lesbians just sit back and realize that they have more rights than anybody. If a gay guy attacks me, can I really get away with having him charged with a hate crime? No. But, If I was to hit a gay guy then I would automatically be publicly known as Homophobic and I would be charged with a hate crime. Damn...I dont see why all of the gays and lesbians cant just be happy about what they got, and if they want more then I agree with the other post, move to Canada.
  • ohh yea i have a something else i cant believe i almost forgot. maybe a little blunt but truth. who ever photoshopped that bullsh*t with the homo's pushing the flag of queer up, that is ridiculous. they want treated equal and all that and i could care less, but to diminish a memorial of REAL soldiers fighting for America. that just reflects horribly on there cause and the people of that cause. Retarded, im sure a lot of vets would like to meet this person responsible for this picture, its the stupidest thing i've ever seen. It would be like people asking for equal right for education and putting a picture of a african american with a coke all over his nose in Abraham Lincolns memorial. This picture projects the veiw that they gay/lez cause is un-Amarican sh*t-bags that will demoralize a US LANDMARK. Then they want all these freedoms from Americans? Move to canada then, they'll except ya
    • LOOK MOTHER f*cker IT IS A SYMBOL OF US OVER COMING DUMB ASS PEOPLE LIKE YOU! SO GO f*ck YOURSELF YOU DUMB ASS MOTHER f*cker!!
  • DADT policy dosnt say no gays in the military, say there will be no questions pertaining to your sexuality and you should not make statements regarding it. This guy Choi was probley discharged for using the military as a step up or a selling point for his cause. if he was such a great soldier, that went to west point his dumbass would know the policies regarding using the military service from profit or bettering ones self of cause. If i made a brand new product and i wanted to sell alot of it i wouldnt say i was in iraq for 3 years serving our country risking my life, so buy this and support your troops. So this gay guy that got kicked out might be using it for publicity, untill you look at his discharge paperwork no one will know. I highly bet that it dosnt say reason for discharge: HOMO. no bet it dosnt say that one, and as for a president, he probley has alot on his mind aside from the DADT policy that will not change anything. I am in a branch of service and have been awhile, been overseas awhile. telling you right now, DADT policy goes away, no one will know, and all the people that do come out of the closet will be leaving military service shortly after. The consequences will be to great for them to continue. a little policy cant change the history of military branches, and anyways the NAVY has always taking Gay's so what the problem anyways
    • Ok you are the dumb one. DADT being in place DOES give the military the right to kick out any homosexual. My cousin actually went on trial because she was suspected of being a lesbian in the army. While she was, they couldn't prove anything so she was allowed to remain in the army. However, some of her fellow soldiers treat her different now because of the scandal around her. The fact is that the military needs to train soldiers how to not be so bigoted, and the DADT policy should be done away with. Yes, there may be need for some sort of policy, but not one where a gay/lesbian soldier can be kicked out just for loving someone
  • i believe tht this is wronggg im not even lesbian or bi and i believe tht everyone should belive what they want i have friends that are bi and lesbian nd im tottaly okay with tht i still feel like they are my bestfriends and when they told me i didnt care i just said thts fine im just happy tht u actually let me kno this tht u trust me

i cant believe tht they just kicked him out of the army after he threatend his life tosave the people in the country he loves i hate when ppl get fired from work when they say tht they are gay lesbian or bi it gets me so angry
    • THANK YOU MAGGIE I FEEL REAL HAPPY THAT PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND. I will support anyones rights but that's f*cked up. I think it's stupid and outdated and I hope that someone does something about this injustice
  • I believe that DADT is a hugely discriminatory and outdated policy that should be removed...and I also understand why it was put in place to begin with. With that being said, I think that DADT should be replaced with another policy regarding homosexuals in our military. A heterosexual person is not required to tell anyone that they are heterosexual, and may decide not to share the details of their personal lives. The same should apply to homosexuals. A heterosexual person may reveal their personal lives to their fellow soldiers if they choose to, and the same should apply to homosexuals. And as far as the protection goes, I do understand that there are bigots and homophobes who may choose to harm someone because of their sexual preference, but there are also those who would choose to harm someone because of their race or religion. And if they do make that choice, they are punished. The same conditions should apply to homosexuals and their discriminators. We cannot expect to shield all minorities from every group that may hate them, and homosexuals have made it clear that they do not want to be even more singled out than they have already been forced to be. People are acting like if DADT is not in place that homosexuals will be running into recruiting offices and bases yelling "I'm here, Im queer"...NOT THE CASE!!!! Some may choose to tell their colleagues, just as a heterosexual man may choose to say "I have a girlfriend", but some may not! Open your eyes, people, and stop acting like homosexuals are dying to tell everyone their sexual orientation so they can be discriminated against and belittled by close-minded bigots! So yes, absolutely remove DADT and replace it with the same exact policies that apply to every other group.
  • Note to Tila... presidents make campaign promises to GET ELECTED! Doesn't mean that they'll fulfill those promises once they get in office. With everything else on the plate right now, I'm pretty sure that DADT is pretty low on the priorities list right now. Unemployment is still rising and will be in double digits before the end of this summer. As an unemployed college graduate who is at the point of tears in the job hunt (and I know I'm not alone), I think the economy is a much bigger issue right now than gay people serving in the military.
  • The DADT policy does not necessarily say that gay/bisexual men have to be living in secret. If the United States Military does not ASK, then they will not ANSWER, nor will they say so. It is put into place because there are people outside of the United States who frown so much upon homosexuality that if they are perceived as such they will be harmed. DADT is a sly way of effectively protecting gay/bisexual men/women who are serving. Also, the question of homosexuality should have nothing to do with one's military qualifications. This isn't the 1960s - things have progressed, just slowly. As a gay in the military, you are incredibly represented by those who love you and support you - however it is not top priority in military service.

Though what happened to Dan Choi was completely out of line. Like I said, the fact that he's gay has nothing to do with how well he will serve, and this should have been taken into account. But the fact that he was open and has "told" of his sexuality - which is irrelevant to military service anyways - is what upset people. I do not think that DADT should be repealed because the pros outweigh the cons - But I do think that you present a good argument, Tila.
  • Im not gay but i think its wrong that gays cannot be who they are. I have gay friends and they don't go around hitting on every guy they see. If the ban was lifted they wouldn't go arouind hitting on every solider they see. I support the troops. My sister is in the military but when discrimination is happening how can you put your trust into a government to keep us safe?
  • See, I am a christian, But i think is it so good that you guys are fighting for something That means so much for the bisexual/gay people..

Keep it up!! make the world a complete differant place... (please include australia) haha.. thats were i live :P
    • Thank you Jordan. You give me hope. :D

Sorry, I'm bi myself and I'm glad to see that not everyone is close minded.
  • i love the picture that looks like Iwo Jima--only its the pride flag flying there with so much independence that it could be Iwo Jima. You are one very strong woman and we need more people like you to speak up and let our voices be heard.i hope president obama does repeal the act but im afraid that he may feel that he has too much on his plate to do so.i just want the day to come.my aunt is a lesbian and was kicked out of the army after she came out and said something..the day has to be coming soon.
  • I'M PROUDLY SERVING IN THE MILITARY. MOST OF US UNDERSTAND AND HAVE EMPATHY FOR GAYS WHO WOULD LIKE TO SERVE IN THE MILITARY. I APPLAUD THOSE WHO DO AND HAVE THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR THEM REGARDLESS OF GENDER OR WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE GAY. EVERYONE IS TURNING THIS INTO A BIGGER ISSUE THAN IT NEEDS TO BE. SERIOUSLY... WE ARE FIGHTING A WAR RIGHT NOW JUST TO GO HOME TO THIS ... FIGHTING ANOTHER WAR AT HOME. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE MILITARY WHO ARE GAY. THEY ARE PROUD OF WHO THEY ARE AND SO ARE WE. WE, MEANING THEIR FRIENDS, BUT THEY DO HAVE DADT INTO PLACE TO KEEP THEM FROM GETTING HURT. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS. IT'S WORKED FOR THIS LONG. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I DON'T WANT OUR MILITARY FALLING APART BECAUSE EVERYONE WANTS TO DISPLAY THEIR SEXUAL PREFERENCES. EVERYONE IS SO BLIND, SERIOUSLY. TAKE IT ALL ONE DILEMMA AT A TIME. LETS PUT THIS ASIDE AND JUST SUPPORT ALL OF OUR TROOPS FIGHTING FOR US...LETS FIGHT WITH LOVE. IT SOUND A LITTLE COWARDLY TO SAY THIS AND I REALIZE HOW IT ALL MAY SOUND BUT COME ON NOW... THERE ARE SO MANY GAYS AND LESBIANS IT'S PATHETIC AND THEY AREN'T SCREAMING AND CRYING ABOUT THIS... AT LEAST NOT MY FRIENDS. THEY ARE CONTENT MAYBE NOT ALL BUT YOU CAN'T ALWAYS PLEASE EVERYONE. EVERYONE IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE FIGHTING ABOUT SOMETHING. BY THE TIME YOU KNOW IT EVERY TEENAGER AND CHILD IS GOING TO BE CRYING BECAUSE THEY CAN'T DRINK..... LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE... THERE IS JUST GOING TO BE A WHOLE OTHER ISSUE IF WE ALLOW GAYS TO BE OPEN IN THE MILITARY. WE ARE GOING TO BE FIGHTING EACH OTHER. WHAT HAPPENS THEN? IF I DIDN'T THINK THAT WOULD HAPPEN THEN SO BE IT. THAT WOULD EVEN BE BETTER... BUT JUST THE THOUGHT OF US FALLING APART AND KILLING EACH OTHER IS A SCARY THOUGHT. I'M TORN BETWEEN THE WHOLE SITUATION....I FEEL SORRY FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION.
    • I appreciate your comment and you make a whole lotta sense. I agree with you it is for their protection.
  • I'm so happy that there are ppl who stand up for whats right still !! We need so much more of you! :)
