Hello Everyone!

So today I woke up thinking about Dan Choi. I know a lot of you probably don't know who he is, so I just wanted to write a little blog to keep you all updated on things! Dan Choi  is considered a hero to many of us in the human rights movement.  Why? Not just because he went to West Point, or served a tour in Iraq, but because he is a BRAVE man who truly stands up for what he believes in, and as you all know by now, I highly admire people who like to break barriers and speak their minds!

On national television he PROUDLY told the world that he was a GAY soldier. *Standing Ovation*  But then soon after he announced that he was GAY,  the army IMMEDIATELY gave him the boot! Now keep in mind, this is a man who proudly enlisted himself in the army, possibly endangering his own life, just so that he could help protect our country and be a PROUD SOLDIER TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! For him to get the boot just because of what gender he chooses to LOVE is absolutely RIDICULOUS to me! HORRID!  Unfortunately, he isn't the first to be discriminated against, and unless President Obama acts fast, and keeps his campaign promise to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy" in the military, he will not be the last!

Being an openly bisexual woman myself and having a lot of close gay friends, I have always HATED that policy, which pretty much tells people that in order to serve our country, you have to live in secret.  You can't openly embrace the person you love or tell others about them.  What kind of message does that send? Well, clearly its one of shame. Very shameful and quite sad.

Think about it,  this outmoded policy sends a horrible message to young people, straight or gay, that the military is trying to recruit. It tells them that the military is an intolerant place that does not value  diversity, fairness, and equality. More than 12,500 gay and lesbian soldiers have been discharged since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" began in 1993. The soldiers were brave enough to lay their lives on the  line to protect the country they love, and for all of us here in America, but they were not good enough live openly and proudly as they are.  The message that this sends, is that the military sees no problem with discrimination- and how is that "American" exactly? This country is supposed to be all about "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL" So they should honor that commandment!  We have come a long way, fighting for equal rights so why stop now?

So now I am looking to our superhero President to do what is right! President Obama says that he will REPEAL the DADT policy, but so far, we don't have a date as of yet.....all we have is just a campaign promise that really gave us all hope during that time that a change was coming!  We shall all be free!  I for one, trust the words of our President. I trust that he will continue to fight for our rights from within the White House walls just like he promised he would. As a matter of fact, I would like to applaud him for extending partner benefits to federal Gay employees, calling on Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, meeting with Mathew Shephard's mom(the same Lady who turned away Perez Hilton for his recent anti-gay slur) about hate crimes, and repealing the HIV travelers ban...so yes, I will give Obama credit where it is due! Our guy, is on the move and I love him for it.

However, we still need a date Mr. Obama. When will you give us that date to repeal the DADT Policy and continue be the Superhero that you can be! We are here, we are queer, and its about time that the military gets used to it!!!  Discrimination is so 2000 and Late! The time is NOW!!!!!! YES WE CAN, BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN! I hope you get a chance to read this Mr. President! I know you have it in you to be one of the greatest Presidents our time!

Yours Truly,
Ms. Tila Nguyen

  • I love the fact that there are ppl out there that are still standing up for whats right! We need sooo much more of you.
  • DADT is in place so they do not get the crap beat out of them or murdered by fellow soldiers. Gay soldiers are not safe nor welcome in the military community and as such they need to realize that. It may not be right or fair, but thats just how it is...
    • i'm not gay but i understand when something needs to change. she is completely right about the fact that the military is wrong for discriminating against people for the gender they happen to love. and it definitely wont stay that way, i'm sure tons of other people want it changed, sure they may be beaten up, but obviously they don't care otherwise they wouldn't the laws to change so badly.
  • I am not gay. But I do believe in living your life the way you choose. I am in favor of any person brave enough to defend his country to do so. I'm not 100% on this but I am pretty sure the Roman armies actually liked the idea of thier soliers being with each other sexually because a person is more likley to defend thier lover as opposed to just another person. I understand the military pushes brotherhood into thier soldiers so much so that it turns into a life long bond. I don't really understand the DADT, I believe if a person is gay then just let them be. I never have a gay person bashing me because i'm straight.
  • Even though I agree, I understand why the DADT policy is currently in place. It would be great if our military was willing to support gays however, the policy is currently in place to protect the gays who are currently serving from being injured.

It would be nice if we lived in a perfect world, but we don't. And I don't think a lot of people understand the repercussions that would befall gays in the military if the DADT policy was removed.
  • IM happy 4 u bcuz im an open bisexual nd what they do is wrong bcuz i want to join the military nd they wouldnt let me bcuz im bi. so go ahead nd preach ur heart out bcuz i got ur back all the way.
  • I totally agree with Tila.Well it should not matter if your gay,or not all that should matter is that there are people that are willing to put there life on the line to serve our country. How come they dont see that and all they see is if they are gay or not.I am not gay i am straight but honestly do you have to be straight to do the job right.Being gay has nothing to do on how you act or think for you to do a job.The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA should be proud for those who are serving no matter what.USA is about LIBERTY N FREEDOM n by looking at it i guess now you cant say that anymore.Since u are punishing people for speaking up for what they believe in n for whom they decide to have as a partner.Well that is all i have to say bout all this.
  • Way 2 go tila! But theres 1 BIG ASS PROBLEM!! My God Forbids gay people. So whosoever believes in him believes in this. ''God made adam & eve 4 a reason, he said there shall be man & there shall b woman. Your objective as a human is to live a good life & produce offspring so they can do the same. You dnt have different private parts 4 no reason at all. The intention is 2 use dem 2 make more humans, not 2 use on the same sex. Now im proud of da people that chose 2 stand up 4 what they believe in, but right is right & wrong is wrong.. Keep the DADT!!!
  • OHHHH GOOD JOB tiLA!!! I applaud u!! woow ur truly amazing person! i luv u more nd more everyday! Nd i truly hope u guys get ur rights! I thk gay people are beautiful! my heart and prayers go out to u guys!! much luv! xoxo PS tila luvv yeww! MUAH!
  • f*ck YOU MOTHER f*cker.....f*ck OFF
  • Tila I agree with you for the most part... He should have the right to serve his country. It shouldn't have been an issue, unless it was for his own safety, or it affected the performance of his team on the field, believe it or not that has to go in to consideration. One person can be a cancer to the team and result in getting cut..And with that being said its bigger than him or any one person for that matter. Being gay is by choice and is fair,
  • I HOPE THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA ACTS TO THIS VERY QUICKLY! IF NOT WHO WILL FIGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THEM WEATHER THEY LIKE THE OPPOSITE SEX OR NOT! EVERY THING SHOULD BE EQUAL!!
  • Oh good job Tila. I hope he reads it too, Ill be dissapointed if he doesnt do anything. Thanks for helping us tila ^_^
  • All I gotta say it's that we should have EQUALITY even if they're who they are we all human! =)
  • my bad ppl i didnt mean to do tht..sry
  • well thanks 2 Clinton.. him and his wife put that Policy into place... and yet people still say that he was the greatest president alive.. that's a bunch of bull sh*t... i have friends that are in the military but there not gay.. but i no a lot of people that are gay... i mey not believe in Wat they believe in.. but most of them are great fun people.. as a madder of fact when i get my permit my "gay hair dresser/ friend" is taking me out and letting me drive on the highway.. i meyb only 14 but i but i have a mind of a 30 year old i want to join the air force when i turn 18.. i plan to go to the air force academy.. least sum1 will read this and will say something.... the gays are people 2 y dnt "Mr. o f*cking bama do something about it.. instead of f*cking the country over?
