Young Money artists performed at the BET Awards, their song choices included overt sexual references with young girls dancing on stage including Lil Wayne’s daughters and her friends.

Public backlash from the performance and an open letter from activist & filmmaker Byron Hurt calling out BET to Debra Lee, the President and Chief Executive Officer, BET Holdings created quite a stir at the network.

“In a culture where one out of four girls and women are either raped or sexually assaulted - and where manipulative men routinely traffic vulnerable women into the sex industry - it is not okay that BET allowed this to happen,” Hurt said. “BET owes its entire audience - particularly girls and women around the world - an apology for its failure to intervene.”

“BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young Money at the BET AWARDS ’09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine). We value and appreciate the feedback from our viewers and have edited Young Money’s performance for all BET Awards ’09 encore presentations.”

“That…was a terrible idea that I’ll never do to myself again. But I was being pressed from different areas to perform, and I think what really happened at the BET Awards is with the passing of Mike, the climate really changed, as far as the award show goes,” he told Complex.

  • the little girls kindof threw me off on that performance i thought they would have gotten OLDER women to walk around and do whateva they do but i dont see how BET allowed those girls to be manipulated into the sex industry..thats just stupid and over exagerated
  • Are you surprised ? It wasn't a good tribute show and Jamie was there to perform " Blame it " .. that performance was wack as was the show . No names but Hip-Hop since '88 .. progressively worse . Now we hear the word " Period" (term for menustration) used in a lyric . Why ? How about whispering " Wait till you see my *&#@ , im a beat that P____ up ?" .. ruined the genre.
  • The BET Awards was GARBAGE!! It was basically NO tribute at ALL to Michael. I am stilll mad at BET for that. They couldve got Usher, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey. to all perform the only good part was the opening, and BBD. And i even give Neyo his props for trying. But JAMIE was mess. HE SHOULD NEVER HOST AGAIN. It seemed like he was making fun of MJ instead of doing a tribute.
&& I love Lil wayne & Drake A LOT!! I really do, but they shouldnt have performed at this one. That wasnt the best thing for a [Tribute to an Icon] They had to bleep out EVERYTHING!! & they was missing the curse words. It was just completely horrible.
Plus They are having stupid shows now like [Tiny & Toya] no disrespect to them. But if they can have a show i can,!
  • when i first saw that performance i thot that they shoulda had it in tha begining cause tha rest was more sad because of michael jackson(r.i.p)..now that i kno its his daughter i feel different about it, but at tha time i thot it was a really stupid thing to do..
  • I think we look to hard into stuff. That was his daughter and they was having fun. There is more serious stuff going on to worry about that. IT WAS JUST A PERFORMANCE FOR ENTERTAINMENT, CALM DOWN PEOPLE.
  • shiiid, that show was awful, the sad part is its to the point with BET, u can almost predict the stuff they'll sho prolly sucks, and most of it lacks substance....anytime i station gives me a marathon of the PARKERS, its time to change the station, lol they call it BET fa a reason, watch it once but i BET u wont watch that trash again
  • I honestly don't see the big deal with the girls on stage. Obviously their parents didnt have a problem with them being up there at that time so why should we? I understand that the song was innapropriate but if the father is the culprit-then who is realy the blame?

Sidebar: Personally the BET awards as a whole was a mess and obvious last-minute show. We all looked BET when MJ passed just knowing they were going to do something wonderful-but instead they gave us garbage. I'm actually embarrased to say that I contributed to their ratings. :SMH:
  • i agree...i was watching the awards and my jaw was on the floor...even tho BET made a mistake by filming a room full of black people LIVE but still we lost the King of Pop...let it go already...LONG LIVE THE KING!!!
  • r yall serious dem lil girls go on dat stage every year. yall really need 2get a life nd leave other ppls alone.
  • Some people are just freckin stupid. U talkin about fu*kin all these girls and then have yo young daughter and her friends dancin to it while u perform it. U mind as well say i'll fu*k all u girls,my daughter and her friends too. Wayne need to get his personal life together and think before he do things. That was a stupid idea he did. If he needed dancers,he should've got ID's from some of the audiance woman, and had them up there lookin stupid
  • Young Money's performances is good for the "BET Hip-Hop Awards" and other "Hip-Hop" award shows ONLY! For a show that gives credit to others, including: Soul, R&B, Gospel, Atheletes, etc! A song like "Every Girl & Always Strapped" WAS NOT apporpriate for that show (with or without the MJ tribute). Jamie Foxx was a little over the top. I guess Monique wasn't available. On any level, "The BET Awards" was once a show that I could watch with my mom, grandmother, and kids, and we all had something to relate to (hey, I'm only 30!). Not anymore. This is why I don't watch BET today! Thank Jah for TV One.
  • it don't matter what know body say b/c thay all still gettn money and what lil wayne do with his daughter and her freinds is his business her mohter was their and didn't have aproblem with it unless you are wayne's mother or you are the producers of the show you don't need to worry about it

  • Bet should have known better, but if they wasn't able to catch that in time, Lil Wayne should have known better for letting his daughter and friends go on stage. I guess the lyrics was just about right for the kids, besides they only become video eye candy right?
  • BET awards is a joke...many have expressed their disappointment....Just because it's a black show doesn't mean it has to lack class...We must raise our standard!
