Bill Cosby said he was "shocked" to hear President Obama weigh-in on the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. on a Boston radio show this morning. "If I'm the president of the United States, I don't care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I'm keeping my mouth shut."

On a Boston radio program this morning, Bill Cosby suggested that President Obama spoke too soon on the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

“I’ve heard about five different reports [on the details of the arrest],” Cosby said on Boston’s WZLX. “If I’m the president of the United States, I don’t care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

“I was shocked to hear the president making this kind of statement,” Cosby said referring to the president’s remarks during last night’s press conference.

The comedian appeared to have dialed his comments back a bit in a later interview on Boston’s FOX 25 television station. Cosby cautioned those from coming up with their own conclusions, but gave the president some leeway.

  • Here is the thing...Obama is President! Evidently, he said what he wanted to. I do not think that the President was being pressured to comment negitavly, however, the incident was suspect. I feel that the Cambridge Police did act foolishly! Where are your comments coming from Bill? When are you going to rally with us, not against us. This is part of the problem with African-Americans, we do not rally with one another. Bill, you need to jump on the ban wagon begin to support our President!
  • barack obama... maybe this wasn't a good idea
  • For one Bill Cosby has the ordacity to speak. We already know what he thinks of children like myself "Dirty Laundry" so I quickly dismisses anything that he says. Secondly if someone show you I.D, proof of address, that should be enough for you to get out of his house and leave him alone. The police was being an a hole and letting his little bit of authority overwhelm his little thinking capacity.. Most police officers display this attitude everyday, lets not forget about the Stanford Experiment...
  • Either way this whole situation was started by a police officer doing his f*cking JOB. He responded to a breaking and entering in progress. When he approached the professor he said that the house was his. And in all rights it is his house. But this officer doesnt know this man from a load of coal, so he went about his regular procedures. How many times do you see a suspect lie to a cop. EVERY time. All this cop was doing is making sure. So everyone needs to quit dropping the race bomb every time something like this happens. I get sick if hearing how racist us white men are and how bad everyone else has it. A cop doing his job. Think about a family member you have in a police uniform and call and ask them how the wouldve handled that situation.

  • Yeah I dont't trust Bill Cosby Story at http://www.dontknow3.com/ Too much of a generation Gap
  • Are you serious?? If anyone should be quiet it's Bill Cosby. I respect the brother for all he's done for black people but Barack is 100% correct for speaking out on this issue. He's the president, as a matter of fact he's OUR president. He's speaking for all the black men and women who don't have a voice. Is he supposed to forget that his family is black because he lives in the white house now? That incident could've happened to a member of his family. If he's supposed to be silent every time an issue of race occurs then the Bill Cosby's of the world need to step up and take that weight off of him. I haven't heard anyone else of african descent comment on the situation. I don't hear anyone complaining when Diddy calls himself " Ciroc Obama ". What type of ignorant stuff is that?? Where's the outrage?? I personally am proud to have a president who's speaks his mind about issues that affect our people when the cameras are rolling.
    • As others have stated "It is what it is!" I think Mr. Cosby is to some degree correct but being Black in America is a unique experience. I am a Black female professional and was recently photographed and fingerprinted for not having my ID on me while being a passenger of an automobile.

The insensitivity of some police can cause concern.
    • I agree with Obama and not with Cosby. Cosby is trying to be helpful, but he has a tendency to scold, as he's become a bit of a grumpy old man. It happens to a lot of men as they get older.

"I don't hear anyone complaining when Diddy calls himself " Ciroc Obama ". What type of ignorant stuff is that?? Where's the outrage??"

Somebody called an outrage party and nobody attended. Maybe because Diddy's joke isn't malicious. How about Jim Jone's jokes about the Obamas? I'm not outraged and I won't be re-telling them since I'm not going to get away with it, but it was good for a chuckle.
    • Yes Teri, yes, very unique. Unique to the extent that a Man who is African American, raised in Indonesia and Hawaii, by a White Mother and Grandparents, made his home Chicago, a community where Black people are prominate and powerful in every aspect of society. Yet he knows the Black Experience. It is something that we can never really explain or describe. It is truly something that you can only know first hand. When I go into a store or place of business I know the difference between poor service and a racist attitude. After Mr.Gates proved that he was indeed in his own home, and yes I'm sure he was indignant, probably being a real jerk ! What was the reason for the arrest? Was he threatening physical harm? Did he n the strike or take a swing at the officer ? Do I think that had it been an elder white gentleman being a jerk would he have been arrested, probably not. Should my President speak oincident ? Well it's not like the guy can win can he ?
  • It it what it is!
  • It is what it is....
  • i think bill just like to keep down confusion bill know how to make money but just like bill said keep your mouthshut he can say that just like obama said what he said y becase he is the president he can say what he feels fa real people are always ganna coment on what he has to say look it up every thing he says and does is going down in tha history books . keep hope alive and say whats on your mind.
  • I think it's about time we have a president who doesn't just speak in scripted, pre-remark over analyzed statements. Obama is saying what HE THINKS. How bout that? The media will be on him regardless. I know we all want him to keep his approval rate up but he got where he is speaking the truth as he sees it. Now that he's been elected why should he stop? The down right bold and honest nature of every comment that man makes is incredibly admirable whether or not you agree with him. That's what got him my vote. Go head OBAMA!
  • Bill Cosby is right, simply because now the President is getting FLOGGED by the media. Anything he says that isn't 100% factual will be used against him. He should not have commented & just spoke on his health care reform bill. & by the way there are more versions of what happened to Skip than there were people on the scene. & 1 last note Bill Cosby has earned the right to speak on these things with his DECADES of being a POSITIVE image for African Americans. What have YOU done to claim he is an Uncle Tom. Hell you all don't even know that Uncle Tom actually FREED MANY slaves. A little knowledge is dangerous, and complete ignorance is DEADLY!
  • i hate bill cosby you hear me i hate you old man go eat some fukkin puddin
    • Don't hate. Cosby is cool. Obama was right, Cosby is overly cautious and consternated. But who can hate Bill Cosby? Not for one moment has it ever occurred to me to feel hateful towards a man who's shared so much of his personality with society over the years. Cosby is a good man, but also a bit grumpy and cantankerous.
  • BILL COSBY HAS BEEN A BASKET CASE ever since his son was murdered. It's amazing that he has nothing positive to say nowadays in regards to the Black Society...(Everything is NEGATIVE) You have to really ask yourself, what would even make him speak out against The President Of The United States now? Why not Bush?. (It's called THE WHITE MAN's PAPER)Republican money is taking care of him REAAAAAL GOOD right now. BILL COSBY is the new POLITRIcK
