Hey GG world..it’s your girl La La!  This is my first blog but I can promise that you are in for a fun ride with me because there is so much we can talk about together!

I’m proud to say as a Puerto Rican woman born and raised in New York City that my first blog is about something very near to my heart. As many of you have heard on the news, Sonia Sotomayor, a Puerto Rican woman from the Bronx, was appointed to the Supreme Court and history was made!!  Not only was this a historical turning point for all women but more importantly for Latina women.

I’m not a political expert but what I do want to share is what this historic news meant for me as a Latina woman.   To be honest, I felt and still feel an overwhelming sense of pride and appreciation to count her as one of my culture’s most important role models.   The fact that she was able to rise out of poverty to overcome obstacles and climb the ranks in a male dominated environment is absolutely amazing.   It proves that success comes with hard work and determination.

I also hope this historic moment will inspire other young women to pursue their goals and dreams and to raise the standard of what it means to be Latina in this country.

We have the control to change the stereotypes and the power to change the world.

It's also exciting to know that this historic moment will be forever in the history books where my son will learn about it and his sons or daughters will learn about it.

I’m so proud to be a woman.  I’m extra proud to be a Puerto Rican woman.

Congratulations Justice Sotomayor!!!

Remember…whether you agree or disagree with my thoughts, I would still love to hear from you!  Let’s talk!

Stay tuned for my next blog.  In the meantime, follow me on twitter @lalavazquez

xoxo,
La La

  • Lala is a black latino. Saying your are your nationality instead of race, particularly if you were born in this country, in a convenient way of making the dominant culture think you are not one of those " blacks". Sad part is she does not realize the similar stereotypes the dominant culture has for Latinos.
  • One thing, LaLa should know, one drop of African blood, 80% of the time is dominant, So I'm not knocking her for being of Hispanic heritage, but, I strongly see african/black features, from what I understand, she started her career at a black radio station and believe there are alot more latina radio and tv stations .
  • OOO Y'ALL BAD, GOOGLE SEARCHIN. SHES LATINA, NOT BLACK. GET OFF HER TEAM... THATS WHY Y'ALL ASS BEHIND Y'ALL COMPUTERS ALL DAY. WHO GOT CARMELO ANTHONY? RIGHT.
  • :looks down: ... Jesus ppl are still on her race? Lets move on people..who gives a sh*t if shes Puerto Rican or Afro Puerto Rican..it is what it is..shes talking about something WAY deeper then a bloodline.
  • La la is clearly Afro-Latina. Latinos come in different races.
  • First of all la, la you were brought to the light from the black people. Now you get a lil paper and you latina. To be honest you are a black girl who speaks spanish cause you don't look nothing outside of black girl so, stop trying to switch over now after blacks accepted you azzz black. That what ticks blacks off everybody steals our shizzz then holla im not black. So if you latina then bounce out the hip-hop girl cause that was founded by black and will remain black so either you down or not.....If you was going to come at us like this you should have brought that out when you chasing paper....
    • I do agree that blacks brought LA LA to the fore front, however I don't agree that her calling herself latina is automatically saying to the world that she is not BLACK. I think she is just identifying with her culture. Her race will never change. I'm mad darker than her and I I'm black, but I still identify with my cuban culture. I really don't think she meant that in a bad way or trying to downgrade the black race as so many people do all the time. No one wants to identify with blackness! Its sad but true!Of course I'm speaking in general terms when I say nobody. But, at any rate give la la a break. LOL! Eso si que es!!!
  • You`re damn right....we`re the sexiest race in the world!!! Latinos & Latinas...we`re on deck!
  • Are you proud 2 be Afrikan, too? I never heard that mentioned, and judging by your European Standards of 'beauty', the contact lenses, pink lipstick, I'm thinking you're not

  • It is sad to see so much commotion about "being black" or not... This whole subject is a big mess-up that keeps alive in USA and even inspire some portions of population - the wannabe "like americans" - in other countries. I lived several decades already and since I am a kid I know three races - white, negro and yellow but the euphemism in USA changes time to time. Once negro, then black and now "african-american". I feel sorry to see how the establishment manipulate the masses. Do we hear so many variations for white?? do we hear "white-american"? or "european-american" to identify the whites? The establishment (the whites) are denying the negros the legitimacy of being "Americans", think about it.
In the 70's I heard, in my country, that the new fashion was "black is beautiful" - and it is beautiful but I prefer negro is beautiful, and we (most brazilians) love the cross of races, negro with white, white with yellow, black with yellow. We, brazilians, are proud of our mulatas, the most beautiful women in this planet - but allow me to say that I find you outstandingly gorgeous, La La and besides that I believe you are a beautiful person too.
    Um beijo!

  • Am happy to see a Puerto Rican get good coming to us. When stating getting good coming to us means sotomayor is not a supreme court justice for just Puerto Rican or Hispanics but all Americans. Wish her well. The great Roberto Clemente.
