This Is Why I Love Hip-Hop

Today I am overjoyed because I got to witness the true power of hip-hop once again.  The power of giving back.  That is what hip-hop has been about since day one and what it will always be…because the tie between the poets and their communities is unbreakable.

At the Rush Gallery, we announced a partnership with Bounty to launch a program called Bounty-Ful Bridges, which will create more arts programs for young people.  I was thrilled to see my dear friend, Mary J. Blige there – it is a testament to her character that every time we call on her, she is always there.  Always.  There is not a cause in the world that Mary doesn’t care about.

So, there we were with all these kids at the gallery and this wonderful company who wants to keep giving back.  And we all know the importance of art in the lives of kids, so the impact that partnerships like this can have is endless.  I just love giving kids a chance to express themselves.  The brand manager of Bounty, Eric Higgs, told me how “estasctic he is about being part of something so special, that will help so many young people by exposing them to the arts.”  They even gave a check to Mary’s foundation, FFAWN.

Throughout the years, I have been inspired by so many artists who rarely get recognized for their incredible work they do in the community and the various foundations that they have started.   But this is hip-hop, so we try to brush that off and continue to do the work, because we know that we must do the work, so we can help our communities.  So with this blog, I not only want to celebrate our new partnership with Bounty, but I also want to celebrate the work of my peers, like Ludacris with The Ludacris Foundation, Wyclef with Yele Haiti, Diddy with Daddy’s House, Eminem with Marshall Mathers Foundation, Nelly with 4Sho4Kids Foundation, 50 Cent with G Unity Foundation, David Banner with Heal The Hood, John Forte with In Arm’s Reach and so many others who have charities or who are doing charitable work.  This is the spirit of our generation.  This is the spirit of hip-hop.  This is the spirit that I am humbled to have the ability to promote every day I go to work!

  • Hi Russell. I love to see the music industry give back to the community, which is why I would be pleased to have you participate in my Guinness World Record Attempt at the LONGEST SOUL TRAIN LINE coming Summer 2010. This line is a tribute to DON CORNELIUS, the creator and face of Soul Train and whose show has showcased and supported MANY artists! For this reason, I am reaching out to the music industry to please support, participate or sponsor this event to help make it a success. I can't divulge all of the plans but I have written you letters regarding the event and I would love to discuss it with you if you'd like to participate or be involved in any way. Please reach me at 206-203-3054 at any time if this event interests you.

The website is www.soultrainline2010.com and it has already been around the globe to nine (9) countries in less than a month and I am thrilled at the online interest to register. (Sorry that I can't include my name, but your staff has my letters and private contact info). Thanks and I hope you will consider contacting me about this event.

  • WAY TO GO, RUSH, MARY, AND BOUNTY, TOO! Beautiful, happy faces ~ what are the shirts they're wearing?

Arts are a natural part of alternative learning, and the best part is there's no red tape or hoops to jump through to get formal programs in place. The "real world" is our school, and there's an abundance of opportunities for artists of all ages to show off their creativity.

  • It is because she has been through so much in her life. She can relate to troubled youths. They can relate to her. Her music is nothing short of an autobiography. It tells of her trials and her successes. She is a true inspiration to all.
  • Mr. Simmons, I am so glad to hear that you agree with me regarding the arts being a crucial part of a child's learning experience. That is part of the reason I use any media outlet that I am a part of to speak about the work we do @ The Harlem School of the Arts. Our children need a positive alternative to what the street life may offer. Programs like the one your involved with as well as the many other are so needed. Please take a moment to check out the website www.harlemschoolofthearts.org and let me know when you want to come visit!:)
  • I would love to be a part of this and I agree, the arts are very relevant to a child's life, it played a big part in me growing up and it still does!!! It feels great to help out and I am trying to do the same, so I say just keep doing you Russell and I will always support your endeavors!
  • great work Russ!
  • How can I get involved in this? I'm a school administrator, and I have the necessary resources and connects to see this branch out in my school system. Great Work! I love to see when we give back to the children! Peace Profound!
