Affion Crockett Helps Chris Brown Sell Records (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW)

Posted August 24, 2011 by Fida Marie for Global Grind Staff

Affion Crockett has gone from that funny guy on Nick Cannon's show, to YouTube sensation, to host of his own television show.

It's been a wild ride and now Affion has some big shoes to fill as the new king of sketch comedy.

His show In the Flow with Affion Crockett is hilarious and with spot on impressions of Jay-Z, Dave Chappelle and our own Russell Simmons, it's sure to be the next DVD box set you must own.

We sat down with funny man Affion Crockett to discuss his new show, his come up from Wild N Out and much more. Check it out below and be sure to watch In The Flow Sundays at 9:30 p.m. on Fox.

GlobalGrind: Congrats on your new show.

Affion Crockett: I appreciate that.

How is this show different from some of the other sitcoms, sketch comedy work you’ve done, like with Wild N Out?

This is actually where I get the ability to be in character, where in Wild N Out, the whole show is in front of a live audience and it’s just me doing voices, but not actually being in character.

The voices you do are so dead on, man! How do you get the cadence down for your voices?

It’s a strange tactic. I just listen to people, start talking like them and 9 out of 10 times, I nail the voice. But it also helps when it’s somebody that I’m a fan of because I’ve watched and listened to them so many times already without even trying to get them down.

Speaking of fans, there was an incident at the radio station. That was crazy, were you a bit nervous when the whole thing was going down with you and Peter Gunz?

When Pete walked in, he had the two big goons with him. Part of me said, this was a joke because Freeway had just come in and Freeway and me had just talked before I went to the radio station. So I thought they set it up just to make it look good for camera. So when Pete came in, and he starts talking about pistol whipping and all of that, my thing was this, I understand that NY radio stations have had a history of rappers getting shot. I was like, look, that’s not my thing, I don’t want to escalate the situation. If he’s really mad, I’m going to let him say his piece and we’ll see what happens. There was a part of me that was a little hesitant, I wouldn’t say nervous but I was definitely hesitant. Good thing he opened his arms and it was a joke.

Who are some of your favorite characters to do, since you do so many of them well?

Of course the Jay-Z impression is the one that everybody loves most. The Russell Simmons impression definitely. From the new show I have this character called Arrogant Gospel Singer, everybody loves that dude.

The show reminds us of In Living Color and that’s what this generation is missing. Are you ready to be the next voice of comedy?

To some degree, I already am. That’s where I started a lot of the stuff after Wild N Out. But this generation, there’s only a few people that can do impressions of people and capture original characters in his voice. Like I said, I think I already am that, I’m not going to run from it.

After Wild N Out went off the air, you hit the internet super hard. What made you think to go the internet?

Quite frankly, I tried to get my own show after Wild N Out and everybody told me no. Instead of giving up and saying no, I said all right, let’s produce my own sketches online until I get my own show and that’s exactly what happened.
