Posted February 9, 2012 by BlogXilla for Global Grind Staff

Capone, the Gangster Of Comedy, is about to blow up! He's been putting it down for years and he's one of the most respected comics in the business.

EXCLUSIVE: They Got It Wrong About Hova by Russell Simmons

Most recently, Capone headlined Russell Simmons presents Bring The Ruckus and totally brought down the house.

We had the chance to catch up with Capone and get the dirt on how he got into comedy, helping Kevin Hart land his first movie, and much more.

Where do you pick up your knack to do accents like that?

Capone: Just being around different people, not only picking up the voices, but basically the culture. Once you start to understand the culture it becomes a lot easier.

How did you get your start in comedy, what made you decide that you were going to try this for real?

Being the class clown and being into the rap business, the entertainment was always there, but I got dared into a comedy competition, ‘If I Thought I Was Funny,’ by a big promoter back about 20 years ago. I actually won the competition without having any knowledge of what comedy was about and the rest is history.

How does your comedy come about now, do you sit down and write?

I try to stay on topics, I talk a lot about relationships basically because I’ve failed in so many. I try to definitely keep up with all the current events and a lot of tragedies I try to turn into comical situations.

What’s the funniest thing that happened to you in a relationship or the funniest Valentine's Day story you can share?

I was dealing with a girl and me and my ex-girl just broke up. I was dealing with another girl and they had a mutual friend, so the new girl felt like she wasn’t for me. I was trying to end it, but I had already invested a lot of money in her with minks and all kind of materialistic shit. I tried to get it back before I actually broke up and the mutual friend put them together to set me up, which I didn’t care after I got them god damn minks back!

You shot a movie called Paper Soldiers with Kevin Hart, which was on Dame Dash's Rocafella Films. How did you land your role in that film?

Damon and Jay-Z came to see me at Caroline's. Damon said, 'I got a role for you' and he actually told me to bring some of the guys that I had on the show, 'cause that was my show at Caroline's. I introduced Kevin Hart and a couple of other comedians. But me and Kevin Hart got the two main roles. Pretty much it was just history, because the next movie we made I starred in playing him. It was a great thing, especially for a guy like Damon, who has a great eye for talent, to just pick us from nowhere and give us that opportunity. He didn’t know if we could act; he didn’t know anything. He just looked at us and said, 'Hey, I got a part for y’all in this movie, would y’all be interested?'

What was it like when you were handed leopard drawers and Damon said you are going to wear these and dance?

It was my creation. Being a comedian I want to be somebody who is above the rest, so I took it upon myself to actually do something a little bit different. There was a little freaky side of me in my home because they made me serious pretty much throughout the whole movie.

Do you feel you are ready for that next step in your career?

I think my career has just been preparation for stardom. Now I feel the star in me is starting to come out and a lot people are seeing it, because not only are they investing time in me, they are investing tutoring and nurturing me to become a star. For Russell Simmons to hit me up, to tell people to follow me because he feels that I’m the funniest guy in the world, that didn’t get the big break. Now I’m on the Shaq tour that has added a lot of cities and for me to get all of these opportunities and to headline that tour is a real big thing right now. I think people are definitely recognizing and it took some time for me to become humble, because when you feel you’re good and everyone else is kind of passing you, it can make you a really arrogant person. I had to be humbled in order to move to the next step and I’m very much humble now.

Why do you think it takes so long for a black comic to break through?

First of all, it’s a business. People invest into people that they think can make finances from. A lot of times, even within myself, we don’t take the time to learn the business. We jump into things and we don’t know the business. We really don’t know what finances are supposed to be done and we don’t know about negotiating contracts. After a while of being let down and turned down so much, you don’t get the knack to learn these type of things.
