Imagine if your whole world changed overnight. If you woke up the next morning and you weren’t allowed to love the person you loved anymore. If you looked the mirror and you didn’t look how you looked yesterday.

If your face was bruised and battered, but you could only think about the person who beat you.

That was Rihanna‘s reality. As she put ice on her face to stop the swelling, she wondered how she was going to cope with life after love failed her. Her heart too big for animosity, she showed compassion. When Chris Brown beat her, she didn’t hate him, she just “felt like he made that mistake because he needed help.”

Her words are key! She didn’t call it an act of violence or rage, but rather a mistake. A misunderstanding between his fist and her face because he needed help – help dealing with life and anger.

Well, 3 years has passed since that mistake and he still hasn’t gotten help, and no one has tried to help him. They only wanted to help Rihanna. No one offered a shoulder for Chris Brown, instead he was blackballed and labeled a monster.

A monster who Rihanna loved. She told Oprah:

“Nobody’s going to say he needs help, everybody’s going to say he’s a monster, without looking at the source. And I was more concerned about him.”

Let’s look at the source. In 2006, Chris Brown spoke to MTV about how he watched his mother get beat by his stepfather, but his reaction could have been a red flag back then.

“My mom was an influence on me about how to treat a woman. I had a stepfather who used to abuse my mom when I was like 7 or 8. I used to always say when I turned 15 or 16 and I got bigger I’m going to kill him.” Chris goes on to say, “I’ve always felt that hate in my heart.”

Do those demons still haunt him today?

Back when he was a kid, they used to terrify him. He told Giant Magazine:

“He made me terrified all the time, terrified like I had to pee on myself. I remember one night he made her nose bleed. I was crying and thinking, ‘I’m just gonna go crazy on him one day.’ … I hate him to this day.”

We forget that Chris was a kid when this happened; he was 19 years old when the world turned its back on him. But now is not too late to help him. Now is not too late to join Rihanna and figure out how Chris can ease his pain. He lost his best friend too and had to go on with life while being figuratively executed in the media. Maybe he just needed a hug.
