Miseducated Or Misunderstood? The Curious Case Of Lauryn Hill

Posted August 21, 2012 by SusannaOsborne for Global Grind Staff

It's difficult to title Lauryn Hill. She has been much more than a singer, songwriter, or rapper to the American culture. She has affected significant change through the use of words and music, enlightened the young and old, and expected more from everyone.

She's a friend to the public, the best of the best adore and credit her ... she's helped us all. She sweetly sung her way into our hearts. So how did it come to this?

As a woman who has always taken a stand musically, it comes as no surprise that she is still challenging the world we live in, up until this very day - this time through resisting the American Government.

This is the woman who rapped, "Now Lauryn is only human... Don't think I haven't been through the same predicament..."

She is one of us, going through the same ordeals, just on a much larger scale that many will never be able to understand.

Regardless, it has to be acknowledged that Lauryn has made some severe mistakes. Simply put, she owes the United States tax money; I'll give them that point. Still, how do we put someone who has meant so much to the dreams and hearts of so many Americans behind bars?

Does not paying her taxes outweigh her contribution to this society? Personally, I don't think so. I'd also bet my bottom dollar that there are a few other unnamed people to blame besides Lauryn. You would think that after writing and recording such a historical album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - an album that still gets a crazy amount of spins in 2012, she would be able to foot the bill she owes and then some.

Lauryn rapped in "Forgive Them Father:"

"They say all the right things to gain their position... Then use your kindness as their ammunition...To shoot you down in the name of ambition, they do."

They do. It's my personal opinion that she has been punished enough. We can't send L Boogie, First Lady of The Fugees, singer of "Every Ghetto, Every City" to prison for 3 years! She's not the shady and criminal character the media is trying to make her out to be.

"It's funny how money changes situations..." I hear you L!
