Randy Jackson is out as an American Idol judge!

Randy was the last hold over from the days of Paula and Simon, but while his seat at the judges' table has come to an end, he's not leaving the show.

TMZ reports that Randy will take on the role of mentor.

Sources connected to "Idol" tell us ... there's some concern among the brass that Jackon is not well-suited for the mentor role ... but they feel they need him because he's the glue that helps keep the show together.

As for Nicki Minaj, many people believe the deal is 99 percent done, and producers are looking for fireworks between Nicki and Mariah.

It was widely reported that the "Butterfly" singer isn't happy she'll be sharing the table with the much younger Queens rapper. 

Honchos are keenly aware Mariah Carey isn't a fan of Minaj and doesn't want her at the table ... a fact producers LOVE because they think the conflict and tension will be good for the show.

It also looks like Diddy and Yeezy are out as possibilities, and the judges' table will sit four people this year - one of whom will surely be a country music star. We can't wait.
