In 1987, Eddie Murphy probably didn’t know he was creating the blueprint for how to deal with scandal when he told his now classic joke, “It wasn’t me.”

Eddie said a man can give sex so good that he can get caught coming out of another woman’s house and all he needs to do is say “It wasn’t me” and he shall be forgiven.

Reggae star Shaggy took it one step further in 2000 by making a whole song about it, the reggae hit told the story of a guy who blatantly got caught and claimed, “It wasn’t me.”

This prompted Stale singer Josh Levin to go on NPR and declare that R-Kelly used the “Shaggy Defense” when people not so clearly saw him on video tape with a young girl and he simply said, “It wasn’t me!”

Now Nicki Minaj is hoping the same thing will work for her. After TMZ reported she was in a fight with a man, many believe to be her rumored boyfriend Safaree, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to throw shots at TMZ.

Safaree followed up with his Twitter rant, saying, “4 the record I would never lay a hand on ANY woman, I have all sisters and No brothers And that’s the last I’ll say about that!!! God bless”

Now I understand that celebrities need their privacy and I don’t think Nicki ate a knuckle sandwich from Scaff Beezy, but I do think there is more to the story.

My thing is, why do celebrities continue to use the Shaggy Defense? Weiner did it and it cost him his job. Mister Cee did it and ended up copping a plea in court. Charlie Sheen sort of did it, but then didn’t do it, but I digress.

The fact of the matter is, the truth shall set you free. When you’re a star people want to know things and the best policy is to come clean right away before the lies start to seep out to the public via TMZ and The Smoking Gun.

Once it’s on the Smoking Gun, it’s true.

So spare yourself and just admit it.
