GlobalGrind chatted up singer, actress and now designer Emmy Rossum at the launch of her new Elie Tahari handbag last night.

Dubbed the “Emmy” after the “Shameless” star, the leather bucket bag features a cotton canvas interior and comes in four sizes: tan, black, mushroom, yellow, metallic and white. The bag was designed to benefit Safe Horizons, a nonprofit organization that works to end domestic violence.

Rossum and Tahari are friends and it’s no surprise the two decided to work together.

“I met Elie years ago and he approached me to design this bag with him,” Rossum said, explaining how she became involved with the project. “It was a fun collaboration. I had no real idea that I would ever design a bag, but I am a woman and I carry bags; and I know what I like and don’t like so thats where it started.”

Was the design process easy for Rossum? “It started with just wanting an everyday bag that was season-less,” Rossum told us over the din of music and chatter on level two of the Elie Tahari store in SoHo. “So many women have big bags that are heavy to begin with, I wanted something really light and really functional”

Rossum looked amazing in head to toe Tahari and had another reason to celebrate: her show, launched in January, was renewed for a second season. “I’m really excited to see where the character goes,” said Rossum, who was introduced to fashion as a kid while performing in productions. “I was into all kinds of designs. I sang in the opera and in productions as a kid and I got to see different types of costumes so that’s where my love of fashion came from.”

Her favorite designers at the momen? “I love Valentino, Phillip Lim. La Perla has good things.”

After the break, more Rossum.
