The Airplane Boys are the flyest musical act coming out of Toronto, hence the name The Airplane Boys!

Not really, but these fashion forward music loving hipsters are super dope. This hip-pop duo’s creative style and musical intellect make them “Born To Be” stars.

The Toronto duo took time out of their busy schedules to chit-chat with GlobalGrind about an exclusive never before seen video clip (below) of their music video “Sleep.”

The Airplane Boys, comprised of Beck Motley and Bon Voyage, have been making dope music since they were 10 and now they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Check out the exclusive interview and video below!

Your mixtape “Where You Been” dropped on the 4th. How have you guys been feeling with all the success?

Beck: We just like when people come up to us and give us their testimonies like, this song put me through this and this song got me through that. That’s the best way we can get paid. That’s the best form of currency we are getting right now in the streets, at least in Toronto. Plus the hate, that shit is hilarious but we love that because that means we got everyone’s attention now.

Your Born to Be” video is super dope and the imagery is crazy! How did you come up with the concept of that video or who helped you creatively come up with the video?

Bon: Who is responsible for that is Warren Credo, the brand director of Beau Monde, which is like the body behind everything to do. He pitched the idea to us and those places mean a lot to us, these are places we went to as kids. He showed us everything and we came back to the drawing board. It’s really a team effort and Warren directed that and took it to that next level.

What was your inspiration behind the song “Born to Be?”

Beck: We had those verses a while back from watching films or whether it be women ― we always derive from our relationships with women and how we interact we them. It was just an inspirational moment and we were in the studio with Illangelo. He was like, ‘Yo man what is that?’ I was like, ‘Yo what’s that Arcade Fire sample.’ He was like, ‘The Suburbs.’ We played it for Illangelo and he found something on it at the end and flipped that sample and J laced his verse on that. To say where it was inspired from, I guess just looking back on things and keeping a positive perspective on things and keeping our skin thick and going through the line of fire, the doubters and all that stuff.

You guys met when you were kids?

Bon: Yeah, definitely. My parents split when I was like 10 I moved to an a neighborhood where I’m still at and that’s where I met Manny. I was showing him crafts one day just writing on my desk and he was like, ‘Yo you rap, there’s a talent show coming up.’ I’m like, ‘Cool let’s do it.’ We formed something called the Rat Pack and that’s history. From there, we’ve just been doing talent shows and growing as friends first and foremost you know that’s why everything comes so natural, because we understand each other and know each other in and out.

How has being from Toronto affected your music? We know a lot of Canadian artists, the most famous being Drake. What is it going on in Toronto, is there something in the water?

Beck: That’s exactly what it is. Extraterrestrials have landed and they put a certain type of protein in the city of Toronto were not allowed to share with Americans. Only some are given the formula and we were fortunate enough to navigate through the forest and take samples and inject that into our systems and now we have the gift!

Nah, I think that Toronto is the capital and people say it’s hard to make it in New York, well it’s like that in Toronto as well. There is a certain filter you can’t come out with garbage from Toronto because everyone is gonna hate you. There are a lot of talented artists in Toronto, but sometimes people wait for that confirmation, that cosign. Drake was always talented, but a lot of people just started to notice him after Wayne came into the picture.

Bon: People just like to watch from afar in Toronto that’s what it is, the minute someone comes in and they say this is cool they will know it’s cool, but once that confirmation is there they be like Ok let’s hop on.

Beck: And that’s not a bad thing, that’s not a shot at our city. I think it’s a good thing for the artists to make it. It’s like watching “300,” “This is Sparta!!” You got to have the fuckin’ motive and the drive to get it past that there, because there is a filter and if you’re garbage you’re gonna get shot at. They gonna hate whether you do good music or not, as long as you stay true to your heart and what you’re doing. Fuck it, we don’t care!

Beck you have awesome hair, actually, both of you have awesome hair. What product do you guys use?

Beck: I tell you, I have to kill you woman. No, I don’t know, I kinda just wake up and I shower and then I walk out and anything that feels cool and gooey, I just throw it in my air. Sometimes it’s like random gel or hairspray to keep it up. If it’s like really warm out, I’m really not into that stuff. I just go out and I wanna look cool.

If you were sent to a deserted island  and you could only bring 3 albums, what 3 albums would you bring?

Beck & Bon: One would be Outkast, “The Love Below” and “Speakerboxx.” Actually we would have N.E.R.D. the first one, “In Search Of.” Definitely that’s like ritual for us right before we go on stage. Definitely a Kanye album, “Late Registration.” We would bring Phoenix, Fugees, “The Score” and a Jay-Z album, gotta have a Jay album, “The Life and Times Volume Three.” Arcade Fire, “The Suburbs,” Radiohead, “Kid A.” We obviously missed a lot, Michael Jackson, “Thriller” that would be the first one. Beatles too and Earth Wind and Fire. You can’t ask that question. I’d rather die.

Can you guys each tell us something people don’t know about you?

Bon: Well like kinky?

No, quirky.

Bon: Ketchup has to be on everything. Condiment up. I can’t eat food without it being touched by something that did not come on it.

Beck: He will reach for the salt shaker just to know that it touched something.

Bon: Something has to go on my food like syrup, I have a sweet tooth. It has to be ready and proper before I digest that.

Beck: Something random, damn. I love playing chess. Yeah, chess.

Your video for “Sleep In the Beginning,” there is a deep meaningful quote from Anthony, the one about “You know the feeling before you go to sleep, well that’s how I’m feeling right now.” Can you guys tell me what inspired you to put that in the beginning of your song in the video?

Bon: First of all, you noticing that just made this the best interview ever hands down. You get big hugs and kisses but Anthony Doobay is a man that was a good friend of ours who passed in a car accident and he was there in the beginning of our ldreams and he got us our first mic.

Beck: Yeah, this guy’s uncle, he purchased a condenser mic off his uncle and he did everything in his power to always support the music side and he would always DJ my parties. We always had Friday parties and everyone would come out and it was a good time and he would DJ for that. That quote when he says this is sleep at his viewing, I overhead one of his other friends and the first time he smoked weed he said, ‘Yo is this how it feels to get high’ and I feel like I’m falling asleep or something like that. I went over to him and I’m like, ‘Yo bro can you say that again, I know we were shooting our video and it all made sense. We really wanted to start our video off with that in homage, because without him we wouldn’t be doing what we do. There are a lot of people that have a heart in what we do and Anthony is one of them.

Do you guys want to tell us about upcoming projects you have?

Beck: We are shooting a video this weekend or next week, not gonna tell you which one yet, because we don’t know. We gotta figure that out.

Bon: We are working on the next project, you can expect that look out, we’re planning more videos, more performances, more awareness, more of us in your face, like we’re here finally!

Beck: Just coming out to the party more, coming out and shaking more hands and telling people our story. It’s gonna be a beautiful thing. We tell all the listeners and supporters, ride with us because it’s gonna be a beautiful ride. Hop in the whip.
