How has being from Toronto affected your music? We know a lot of Canadian artists, the most famous being Drake. What is it going on in Toronto, is there something in the water?
Beck: That’s exactly what it is. Extraterrestrials have landed and they put a certain type of protein in the city of Toronto were not allowed to share with Americans. Only some are given the formula and we were fortunate enough to navigate through the forest and take samples and inject that into our systems and now we have the gift!
Nah, I think that Toronto is the capital and people say it’s hard to make it in New York, well it’s like that in Toronto as well. There is a certain filter you can’t come out with garbage from Toronto because everyone is gonna hate you. There are a lot of talented artists in Toronto, but sometimes people wait for that confirmation, that cosign. Drake was always talented, but a lot of people just started to notice him after Wayne came into the picture.
Bon: People just like to watch from afar in Toronto that’s what it is, the minute someone comes in and they say this is cool they will know it’s cool, but once that confirmation is there they be like Ok let's hop on.
Beck: And that’s not a bad thing, that’s not a shot at our city. I think it’s a good thing for the artists to make it. It’s like watching "300," “This is Sparta!!” You got to have the fuckin' motive and the drive to get it past that there, because there is a filter and if you're garbage you're gonna get shot at. They gonna hate whether you do good music or not, as long as you stay true to your heart and what you’re doing. Fuck it, we don’t care!
Beck you have awesome hair, actually, both of you have awesome hair. What product do you guys use?
Beck: I tell you, I have to kill you woman. No, I don’t know, I kinda just wake up and I shower and then I walk out and anything that feels cool and gooey, I just throw it in my air. Sometimes it’s like random gel or hairspray to keep it up. If it’s like really warm out, I’m really not into that stuff. I just go out and I wanna look cool.
If you were sent to a deserted island and you could only bring 3 albums, what 3 albums would you bring?
Beck & Bon: One would be Outkast, "The Love Below" and "Speakerboxx." Actually we would have N.E.R.D. the first one, "In Search Of." Definitely that’s like ritual for us right before we go on stage. Definitely a Kanye album, "Late Registration." We would bring Phoenix, Fugees, "The Score" and a Jay-Z album, gotta have a Jay album, "The Life and Times Volume Three." Arcade Fire, "The Suburbs," Radiohead, "Kid A." We obviously missed a lot, Michael Jackson, "Thriller" that would be the first one. Beatles too and Earth Wind and Fire. You can’t ask that question. I’d rather die.
