Literally, just three years ago, rap from a female perspective was at an all-time low.
Um, yeah, sh*t was bleak. Things were so bad, even CNN wrote a story about it.
And then Nicki Minaj came along. Her debut album, Pink Friday, was a huge critical and commercial smash, going double platinum and establishing her as one of hip-hop’s most powerful voices.
It seems like Nicki’s success has opened the gates, because now we have an excess of female rappers that are dope as hell.
And not only are they dope, but they come in all types of flavors: white, black, Spanish, conscious, gangsta, flashy, etc.
So, to celebrate the resurgence of real female MCs, here’s GlobalGrind's favorite up-and-coming rappers. Check out our list, look at our favorite videos from each artist and let us know if you agree or not!
And, finally, salute to you, ladies. We hope to hear more of ya'll in 2012!
