With the year rapidly coming to a close, any connoisseur of music can agree that 2011 has been a pivotal year in the industry. With so many big releases in hip-hop, it is hard to pinpoint the biggest artist release thus far.

But, NBA player Brandon Jennings doesn’t skip a beat while telling Global Grind what he keeps in constant rotation. The Compton California native’s musical palate pays particular homage to neighborhood hero The Game’s Red Album and Drake’s Take Care.

In an exclusive interview with Global Grind, Jennings proves he has a keen appreciation for the production of music and pledges to put his music knowledge to the test alongside Ryan Leslie in the near future.

Check out what Jennings had to say about what is bumping in his headphones!

Tell us a little bit about your iPod play list. What is the music that puts you in the zone before practice or before a big game? What do you listen to? My favorite artists right now are Drake, The Weeknd, The Game of course, Rick Ross, and Kedrick Lamar, he’s also big. I like Bow Wow. Those are just a couple artists that I know personally that I listen to. But I’m a real big Drake fan and The Weeknd fan right now. And Rick Ross.

How’d you get into The Weeknd? He’s still kind of under the radar. Who put you on to that? Actually, Drake posted a song of his like last year and it was called “Wicked Games.” I listened to it and I just started following him. After that “House of Balloons” came out and “Thursday” dropped. So for me, I’m a big fan. I’m waiting for “Echoes of the Silence.” So there are a lot of big albums that dropped in the last few months. I know you said Drake is your favorite. But you got Wale, Watch the Throne, J.Cole, what’s your favorite album of those that dropped recently outside of Drake’s album? I would have to say The Game’s and Kendrick Lamar’s. The Red Album I think is a classic for the city of Compton. Also Kendrick Lamar is putting it down for the city of Compton. Those are actually the only three albums I bought. I just bought nine Drake albums. I just went to Target and bought them. What are you going to do with nine albums? Are you going to pass them out? I am going to pass them out and keep one. But those three albums are the only ones I actually went out and bought a handful of. What song from Game’s album do you have on full rotation and can’t get enough of? I’d have to say “The City”. It’s him featuring Kendrick Lamar. I feel like this is a little bit biased. Yeah. Is it a song about Compton? Yeah actually, and the song he has with Boys ‘N The Hood in the background, the song is called “Ricky.”

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you. A lot of people don’t know that I’m really into music. I really love music. Music is like the second to basketball that I would probably want to pursue and take serious. I just got an opportunity to work with Ryan Leslie on his next upcoming album so I’m really excited about that right now. So that’d be something that can hopefully make it happen. And I wanna learn how to play the piano so I can play the piano to a female.

What are you gonna be doing on Ryan Leslie’s album? Are you singing or rapping or something? I don’t wanna be a singer or a rapper or anything like that. I just wanna see the in’s and out’s on music so I can appreciate it more. Especially like an artist and producer like Ryan Leslie. He makes great music, so that opportunity to work in the studio with him, having him teach me things about the music, I think it’s a wonderful idea.

Ryan Leslie is definitely a genius. Yeah. I know I didn’t mention him in artists but I been rockin’ with Ryan Leslie since I was in Europe. Since he was making music on YouTube, showing everyone how he does it. He’s one of the best.
