Jay-Z and Alicia Keys did it big for New York when they released their 2009 banger “Empire State Of Mind,” but recording the track wasn’t all peaches and cream.

According to XXL, Jay-Z the “perfectionist” didn’t like Alicia Keys’ original vocals on the Blueprint 3 track. 

After sending the original vocals to Jay, Alicia Keys reveals that Mr. Carter wasn’t happy about the sound and tone of her voice. 

On a forthcoming episode of VH1’s Storytellers, Alicia attributed her vocal issues to being congested, causing her to sound a little nasally.

Jay-Z eventually asked Alicia to re-record the vocals, and thankfully, he liked what he heard the second time around. 

Alicia Keys’ Storytellers episode is slated to air November 12 at 11 p.m. EST on VH1.
