When we think of Rihanna, we think ‘hard-edged, international rock star with a slick mouth and witty tongue’ (thanks to Twitter and Instagram). 

But after the Bajan beauty’s extremely candid interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter aired on Sunday, we quickly came to see how transparent and delicate the “Talk That Talk” singer actually is and has always been.

So imagine our surprise when RiRi, in some cutting room floor footage, revealed to Oprah some of the music industry’s biggest misconceptions about her ‘polite’ personality.

“[I] was misperceived in the beginning of my career as stuck up… rude”, said the sultry songbird. “I was called a bitch. And it filtered all the way through the radio stations… and back to my label, back to Jay… and everybody that I didn’t want to disappoint. And it hurt…”

The Bajan beauty quickly learned that her innocuous cultural practice of being respectfully “quiet,” quickly found itself lost in translation.

“I was just being polite,” Rihanna said. “You mean well, [but] it can come across a different way in a different culture.”

Another lesson learned for the maturing 24-year-old!
