Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 years, you’ve witnessed the rise of Electronic Dance Music or EDM for short. It has permeated every facet of popular culture – radio, TV, festivals, nightlife, you can’t escape it! What was once a subculture, EDM has risen from the underground and taken over.

Artists like David Guetta, Calvin Harris & Avicii have helped the music crossover and bring in people from all walks of life to the party. Where did this come from all of a sudden? Well, house music has always been around America is just finally opening it’s eyes to what the rest of the world has already known.

Technology has played a major role in the EDM explosion. DJs and producers no longer need to spend thousands of dollars on equipment or studio time. All you need is a laptop and Garage Band and you can create a hit. Skrillex said in an interview that he makes most of his tracks in hotel rooms on the road. Additionally, social media has allowed aspiring producers and DJ’s to connect to their fans and share music.

This has given artists a platform to put out as much content as they want for free and distribute music to fans faster than ever before. Music festivals like Ultra, EDC, Coachella, Burning Man and Electric Zoo have become like mini Woodstocks, each year becoming bigger and more over the top. This past Ultra in Miami, Avicii brought out Madonna as a surprise guest!

Need I say more? Pop artists have taken notice and many are recruiting the biggest producers in EDM to craft hits for them.
