Many have criticized rapper Lil' Wayne for his insensitive line about that references the historically known story of Emmett Till who was brutally murdered in 1955 by two white men who claimed he was flirting with a white woman.
The "Carter IV" rapper ruffled a lot of feathers after saying on the remix for Future's "Karate Chop":
"Beat the p*ssy up like Emmett Till"
Now, the legendary Stevie Wonder is speaking out on the lyric, and he's really not too pleased with Weezy in his poor choice of words and very offended.
According to Necole Bitchie, he responded:
“You can’t equate that to Emmett Till. You just cannot do that. … I think you got to have someone around you that – even if they are the same age or older – is wiser to say, `Yo, that’s not happening. Don’t do that.’
Sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about. Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel? Have some discernment before we say certain things. That goes for me or any other (song)writer.
It looks like these two won't be collaborating anytime soon.
The family of Emmett Till also responded to the lyric, and is demanding an apology immediately from Weezy F. Baby.
The cousin of Emmett recently spoke out, saying:
“It was a heinous murder. He was brutally beaten and tortured, and he was shot, wrapped in barbed wire and tossed in the Tallahatchie River. The images that we’re fortunate to have that ‘Jet’ published, they demonstrate the ugliness of racism. So to compare a woman’s anatomy — the gateway of life — to the ugly face of death, it just destroyed me. And then I had to call the elders in my family and explain to them before they heard it from some another source.”
So far, LA Reid and Jesse Jackson have called up the family to apologize and assured that the line has been removed from the song by Future and Wayne, but no apology has been given to the family by Weezy.
Hopefully this matter can be put behind them, and Lil' Wayne will be more conscious when song-writing!
