In February 2011, Rick Ross officially started building his Dream Team.
The compilation album Self Made Vol. 1, Wale's sophomore album, Ambition, Meek’s two street albums, Dreamchasers and Dreamchasers 2, and Ross’ classic Rich Forever mixtape, gave the hip-hop world some of its most popular and potent music of the last year and a half.
Ross hasn’t stayed complacent either.
He has continued to build his MMG brand by signing talent like the dope Midwest spitter Stalley and the veteran R&B singer Omarion.
Even with all the Bawse moves Ross has made, something is missing. Where are the ladies?
And who is the Queen of Maybach Music?
I mean, seriously, there is only one famous pair of breasts on MMG and it belongs to Rick Ross himself.
Now, technically, you can probably call the lovely Teedra Moses the Queen of Maybach Music. I wouldn’t, though. She's an accomplished singer, and makes pretty swell music, to boot, but I’m talking about a REAL female MC.
Someone that will go bar-for-bar with Ross like Lil Kim went bar-for-bar with Biggie on “Another.”
Ross needs his Lil Kim. The fact that even with all of these properties Ross has been able to pick up, he still hasn’t signed one female rapper is interesting to me for two reasons:
One: MMG's music is geared towards women. There is the misrepresentation that MMG is mostly for the streets. Not really. They make a lot of street sh*t, but the reason why they have been so popular is their music resonates heavy in the club scene, whether it’s the rugged “Imma Boss” or the silky “Touch 'N You.”
And two: there really is a buyers' market for female rappers out there; there are an assortment of high quality female MCs still being sold at a low price. And the best part is that they come in all different varieties, whether it be pop recognition (Azealia Banks) you're looking for, lyrical ability (Nitty Scott MC) or sex appeal (Iggy Azalea).
It’s surprising that Ross hasn’t picked on this trend yet, considering how business savvy he is and how hugely popular someone like Nicki Minaj has been able to become.
So Ross, listen, it's time to smarten up, mane. It's time you sign yourself a Brianna Perry or a Angel Haze. I mean, “these hoes actin' up” is good sh*t, but it would be so much better if we got a female response.
If you don't, your Dream Team will never be complete.
