Don't get it twisted, Machine Gun Kelly isn't your typical white rapper. He's super swagged out and his flow is automatic. He's a rapper's rapper who happens to hate rap. Yup. Sounds ridiculous, but MGK admitted that he doesn't really love hip-hop like he used to, because rappers have "lost the meaning as to why they rap." His musical icons don't start with Tupac or Biggie, he actually loves the Temptations, Motley Crue, and blink-182.
As if MGK isn't complex enough, he actually learned to speak Arabic before learning English. MGK lived in Egypt for four years and attributes his family's constant moving to his cultural perspective. Born in Houston, Texas, MGK's real name is Colson Baker and he didn't really fall into the world of hip-hop until he moved to Denver.
Living in a predominantly black neighborhood, MGK found comfort in the culture. Eventually he found himself in Cleveland, where he calls home. Since Cleveland is his home, MGK said he's glad that Lebron James left, because now "everyone in Cleveland can focus on their next big star which is me." MGK is definitely a Cleveland celebrity. He has a huge following that travels around to all his shows.
What first caught GlobalGrind's attention about MGK was his performance at SXSW in Austin. Diddy came across his talent and thought MGK was hot. Diddy (@iamdiddy) even tweeted "This kid MGK is a star!" Maybe Diddy said it first, but MGK is definitely the next big thing in 2011. His flow is crazy, his style is dope, and his tattoos are pretty damn cool.
