President Obama invited military service members and their families to the White House South Lawn to celebrate America’s birthday. This years’ July 4th celebration included a BBQ for more than 1,200, a concert by Train and singer Amos Lee and a view of the national capital fireworks for the country’s 235th birthday.
The menu included hamburgers, hot dogs, corn and ice cream for everyone to share.
"This day is possible because of your service. And so I think it's only appropriate that we give you a chance to celebrate it together as well," President Obama said.
During Obama's speech he thanked Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Keith Kesterson and honored Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Marlene Riklon, who was on the ground in Haiti less than 24 hours after its devastating earthquake in 2010.
