Occupying Wall Street started out as a small gathering of young students on September 17, 2011, but quickly turned into a worldwide movement.

It’s simple. The chants of “We are the 99 percent” have been bellowing on Wall Street for over a month. The 99 percent refers to the difference in wealth between the top 1 percent and the other citizens of the United States.

Their grievances are straightforward, end social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the power and influence of corporations, particularly from the financial service sector, and of lobbyists, over government.

Their movement has grown significantly, similar demonstrations have popped up in over 70 major cities and over 600 communities in the U.S. and over 900 cities worldwide.

The movement has grown so much that the President couldn’t ignore them, in fact he pledged solidarity with the 99 percent.

Their objective is clear and their presence has captured the mainstream. Take a look as the young people occupy Wall Street in the accompanying gallery.
