The tragic murder of 17-year old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch George Zimmerman has sparked national outrage.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, coalitions of university students in the Daytona Beach area have initiated a three day march to Sanford for Trayvon.
The group, identified as Dream Defenders, gathered at Daisy Stocking Park on Third Street in Daytona Beach on Friday and began marching around 2:30 PM. Coordinator Gabriel Pendas said that when the Dream Defenders finally reach Sanford they will engage in "civil disobedience."
Trayvon was killed on February 26th, 2012 after Zimmerman pursued him for looking "suspicious." Once approached by Zimmerman, Trayvon, who only had a bad of skittles and iced tea in his hands, asked why he was being followed.
The two then engaged in a scuffle, resulting in Trayvon's death after being shot in the chest.
The group plans to march in his honor to demand justice for his murder.
As reported by the Orlando Sentinel:
They plan on marching down West International Speedway Boulevard to U.S. Highway 17-92 into Seminole County.
Marchers said they are hoping to attract interest and have others join them along the way. Students will march during the day and stay in churches during the evenings, Pendas said.
About 40 students, mostly from Tallahassee, Gainesville, Miami and Daytona Beach, were participating Friday and Pendas said he expects additional students to join the march on Saturday. They expect to arrive in Sanford by 7 p.m. Sunday, walking past the Seminole County Courthouse to the Allen Chapel AME Church.
The organizers said they hope their actions will "catalyze" a movement encouraging other students who can't attend to walk out of classes, stage sit-ins or strike wherever they are.
This is certainly a brave effort being carried out by the Dream Defenders.
The fight for justice continues...
