A 6-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy were playing near a hole at a construction site when a wall of dirt fell on them and trapped the children under the debris.

The father of one of the children immediately called 911. Lincoln County Emergency Services spokesman Dion Burleson says emergency crews were on the scene within minutes. The crews used shovels and climbing gear but were unable to save the children

It wasn’t until Monday that the bodies were recovered from the 24-foot-deep pit in Stanley, North Carolina.

Neighbors are saying a man had been building a home on the construction site and was seen digging with a backhoe prior to the accident.

The identities of the children have not been released.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this time.
