And you thought smoking weed was safer than other drugs?

A teenage girl has narrowly avoided death after smoking a synthetic marijuana that she bought from a gas station in Cypress, Texas.

Emily Bauer, 17, has been left brain dead, paralyzed and blind after smoking the “weed” with her friends last December.

Her family said the drug that landed the Cypress, Texas, teenager, then 16, in the ICU two weeks earlier wasn’t bought from a dealer or offered to her at a party. It was a form of synthetic weed packaged as “potpourri” that she and friends bought at a gas station.

The fake weed, known as “spice” or “K2” is an herbal mixture doused with chemicals that trigger a high similar to smoking marijuana, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Fifteen minutes after smoking the “weed,” Emily complained of migraines. She suffered a series of strokes which left her in a psychotic-like state and she hallucinated and acted violently. After being taken to the hospital, she was put into a medically-induced coma so doctors could do tests on her brain.

Doctors soon found Emily’s strokes had caused severe vasculitis, meaning contracting blood vessels had constricted the flow of blood and cut off oxygen to her brain.

Surgeons had to drill a hole in her skull and insert a tube to relieve pressure. But her brain was still affected.

‘We met with Neurology team who showed us Emily’s brain images,’ her mother, Tonya Bauer, said. ‘They told us that all white areas on images were dead. It looked to us at least 70 percent of the images were white.’

Doctors said Emily would not be able to recognise her family and would never be able to use her arms or legs again.

But when the family decided to take Emily off of her breathing and eating tubes and she was still alive the next day, they knew they had witnessed a miracle.

Today Emily is moving her arms and legs and she started eating solid food again. But every day is a struggle; they do not know how much control she will gain.

Meanwhile, her family is doing its best to raise awareness about the synthetic drug that almost took their daughter away.

What a miracle! We’re praying for Emily’s speedy recovery.
