After multiple reports that Adam Lanza may have had a connection to Sandy Hook Elementary that aided in his motive to shoot and kill 20 students, six staffers, and his mother, new evidence supports the theory that he was actually targeting just one teacher.

Police are investigating if the 20-year-old Lanza was fixated on killing Lauren Rousseau, a 30-year-old first-grade teacher who was shot in the face trying to protect the 16 students in her class. Lanza reportedly killed Rousseau and all but one student in her class.

According to the Daily Mail, investigators say that Lanza opened fire on several cars in the parking lot, including the vehicle belonging to Rousseau. Lanza went directly to her classroom after bursting through the school and shooting the principal and school psychologist in the front office.

Other details about the investigation are coming to light as well. According to the Hartford Courant, Lanza was wearing earplugs during his massacre, but authorities are still trying to figure out why.

The hearing protection was still in his ears when police found his body.

‘It’s just weird, given what he was about to go do,’ a source told the Courant. ‘It’s not like he had to worry about long-term protection of his hearing because he had to know he wasn’t coming back out of the building.’

The ear plugs could have been a matter of habit – his mother often took him shooting at indoor ranged where hearing protection was mandatory. Or it could have been to block out the screams of his victims.

The former elementary school remains a crime scene and the students have resumed school in a neighboring building. As always, Newtown is in our prayers.
