Special prosecutor to the Trayvon Martin shooting case, State Attorney Angela Corey, decided against using a grand jury, saying in a press release yesterday: “It’s not needed.”
The interpretation of Corey not needing the grand jury means that George Zimmerman will not be charged with first-degree murder as that decision would have been up to an indictment by a grand jury.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, before turning the case over to prosecutors, Sanford police classified the case as a possible manslaughter. In this case, since Trayvon was not yet an adult, that charge carries a possible maximum sentence of 30 years.
A statement released yesterday by Corey's office said the decision not to call a grand jury "should not be considered a factor" in whether Zimmerman will ultimately be prosecuted in Trayvon's death.
Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said Trayvon's parents were not surprised by the announcement and remain "hopeful that a decision will be reached very soon to arrest George Zimmerman and give Trayvon Martin's family the simple justice they have been seeking all along."
17-year-old Trayvon was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman, 28-year-old George Zimmerman. Trayvon was returning from a local 7-Eleven after buying a bag of Skittles and iced tea.
He was then spotted by Zimmerman while returning to his father's girlfriend's home inside their gated community. Zimmerman called 911, explaining that Trayvon, who was wearing a hoodie at the time, a pair of blue jeans, and red/white sneakers, looked suspicious.
Zimmerman pursued Trayvon even after he was told not to by the 911 dispatcher.
When Zimmerman approached Trayvon, the two got into a scuffle, resulting in Trayvon taking a bullet to the chest at point blank range.
Zimmerman claimed that he shot Trayvon on grounds of self-defense, although Trayvon was unarmed.
Since the murder of Trayvon, the entire nation has expressed outrage.
George Zimmerman has not been arrested yet as more evidence comes forward proving that his claims of self-defense were false.
