Joe Oliver, a close friend of George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26th in Sanford, FL, has come to the aid of his friend. Oliver claims that Zimmerman was “very, very sorry” and if he could, he would apologize to Trayvon’s family.

Speaking on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Oliver said Zimmerman is not a racist and has virtually lost his own life since the shooting, admitting:

“This is a guy who thought he was doing the right thing at the time and it’s turned out horribly wrong.”

On NBC’s “Today” show, Oliver said he had spoken with Zimmerman’s mother-in-law, who said Zimmerman was remorseful.

“I learned that he couldn’t stop crying for days after the shooting,” Oliver said.

Both Oliver and Craig Sooner, an attorney speaking for Zimmerman, said there is other evidence that hasn’t come out that shows Zimmerman was acting in self-defense when he shot Trayvon.

Trayvon’s shooting has sparked widespread outrage, with Trayvon’s parents calling for Zimmerman’s immediate arrest.

Trayvon was returning to his father’s home from a 7-Eleven when Zimmerman started following him, telling police dispatchers he looked suspicious. When the two got into a confrontation, Zimmerman pulled out his gun and shot Trayvon dead.

Today, Trayvon’s parents will address a city meeting at the First United Methodist Church on South Park Avenue, and end at the Sanford Civic Center. Then a town hall meeting will be held at the Sanford Civic Center at 401 E. Seminole Blvd.

Trayvon’s parents are expected to attend, as are civil rights activists Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton.

City leaders have said speakers will be set up outside so those who cannot get inside the building can hear the proceedings. #HoodiesUp
