A Navy lesbian couple out of Virginia Beach symbolized the abolishment of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which made it illegal for homosexual couples to be open about their lifestyle while in the military.

The couple broke boundaries and made history when they kissed on a pier.

According to the Associated Press, the kiss represented the Navy's first kiss tradition, which allows two sailors, out of the entire Navy crew, to be the first to greet and kiss their partner when returning home.

The women, Gaeta, 23, and Snell, 22, were both happy about the transition in policy and the fact that they were able to have their kiss on the USS Oak Hill landing ship.

Gaeta said "It's something new, that's for sure... It's nice to be able to be myself. It's been a long time coming."

The reaction from the crew was not theatric. Commanding Officer David Bauer said that the kiss would be a "non-event" and that the crew did not draw attention to it and neither did the couple.

Snell gave a final reaction to the experience saying:

"I think that it's something that is going to open a lot of doors, for not just our relationship, but all the other gay and lesbian relationships that are in the military."

We say, you go girls!
