The new iPhone 5 could possibly tip the upcoming presidential election in favor of President Obama.

I know it seems farfetched but hear me out. I will walk you through it.

According to Michael Feroli, who is an analyst at JP Morgan, the iPhone 5 could add as much as .5% to the nation’s 4th quarter gross domestic product (GDP). The GDP is the total market value of all the goods and services that is produced by a country.

I know that this sounds a bit confusing and a little bit boring, but again, hear me out. Feroli predicts that iPhone sales in October, November and December (the 4thquarter of the year) should be approximately eight million units. That would add about $3.2 billion to the US economy.

That is a lot of money coming from one product. And if the pre-sales for the iPhone 5 are any indication, it could be even more than that.

Here is the theory on how it may help President Obama. Conventional wisdom says that when the economy is doing well people will give credit to the president. So people are spending money, the economy is getting better and Obama reaps the benefits of all these good feelings and gets re-elected.

Think about eight million Americans walking around feeling good about themselves, downloading apps, taking pictures of their Starbucks orders and then heading into the voting booth. They are not going to vote for Mitt Romney.

I know it sounds crazy but this theory has already been published in the Washington Post and Investor’s Business Daily (IBD). I’m not sure if you are familiar with these publications but IBD is not run by a bunch of bleeding heart liberals who are trying to find any positive spin for President Obama, they’re not Current TV.

For sure the iPhone 5 will have positive effect on the US economy and that may help President Obama in the November election. It also helps that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are currently running the most incompetent presidential campaign since Michael Dukakis. But that’s another story.

It is a bit ironic that Apple may have a part in re-electing Barack Obama. It was Steve Jobs, the late Apple CEO who told President Obama that he was heading to a one-term presidency because he was not business-friendly enough.

Valued at over $620 billion, Apple is the most valuable company on earth. Whatever they do has an effect on this country and, by extension, the world.

I foresee a future where everything that Apple does will somehow change the US culture and economy. But the fact that they can now have an effect on US politics is almost unbelievable. To paraphrase Kanye West, no one company should have all that power.

If Apple really does swing the election for Obama, that’s fine by me. I’m sure on Election Night there will be plenty of iPhone users who will be posting pictures to Instagram of their Obama Victory Parties.

Unfortunately, I won’t be one of those people because I have a BlackBerry.
