The rape trial of five men accused of abducting, raping and murdering a medical student in the Indian capital of Delhi is set to begin today.

DETAILS: NEGATIVE! Plea To Move India Rape Trial Out Of New Delhi Denied!

They face 13 charges, including murder, gang-rape, kidnapping and destruction of evidence, but they deny all allegations.

The men will face the first witness evidence in the trial, testimony from the 23-year-old student’s male friend, who was also attacked in the brutal incident. He was the only witness at Tuesday’s hearing, but he is the first of 80 witnesses to be produced by the prosecution at Saket District Court, a specially convened fast-track court.

The witness, who cannot be named for legal reasons, arrived at the courthouse in a wheelchair, still unable to walk properly due to injuries suffered in the attack.

His father, who accompanied him into the court complex, told Agence France-Presse news agency: “My son will go to any lengths to ensure that the guilty are punished.”

If convicted, the five could face the death penalty. The sixth person involved, a juvenile, is to be tried in juvenile court.

Reports about Tuesday’s proceedings have yet to be released, since all reporting of proceedings inside the courtroom has been banned and the judge ordered lawyers not to speak to reporters.

We are praying for justice to be served and hope that violence against women in traditional India will change as a result of this trial.
