Italian woman Federica Iammatteo, 23, died hours after getting a tattoo on the right side of her spine.

Described as “energetic and sporty” by family members, Iammatteo initially experienced a fever, but as her symptoms became more severe, she decided to go to San Giuseppe Hospital.

Her father, Agostina Iammatteo, said, “As soon as we got to the hospital she was put on a tube and the doctors did not hide the seriousness of the situation. We wanted to stay near but the doctor said there was no need, that they would call us if she got worse.”

Iammatteo’s family returned to their homes worried but hopeful. Unfortunately, in the wee hours of Saturday mourning, Iammatteo passed away. She went into septic shock and suffered from hemorrhaging.

This was not Iammattaeo’s first tattoo, nor was she inexperienced with the tattoo parlor she decided to go to. Her family is seeking answers as to how such a healthy 23-year-old could lose her life so abruptly.

Police are investigating Iammatteo’s death and have inspected the tattoo parlor, but no health risks have been found. However, Iammatteo may have been allergic to the ink.
