The trial of Jerry Sandusky has left a lot of mystery as to how much Joe Paterno knew and how involved he could have been.

It turns out that while the trial was being played out, Joe was still negotiating deals for his position as head football coach for Penn State.

His original contract was supposed to expire by the end of 2012, but reached an agreement with the University’s president by August.

Reportedly, Joe was going to be paid $3 million at the end of the 2011 season if it was going to be his last as coach. He was also going to receive many other University benefits with the deal.

According to the NY Times:

Board members who raised questions about whether the university ought to go forward with the payments were quickly shut down, according to two people with direct knowledge of the negotiations

In the end, the board of trustees — bombarded with hate mail and threatened with a defamation lawsuit by Mr. Paterno’s family — gave the family virtually everything it wanted, with a package worth roughly $5.5 million.

Even though his name is tainted for the Sandusky situation, his family and students are still trying to have his legacy be remembered at the University.
