Police have charged 14-year-olds Todavia Cleckley and Marcus Velasquez and Kyle Goosby Jr., 13, with criminal homicide and other charges in Saturday’s shooting of Kayla Peterson. Bill Bailey, Peterson’s boyfriend and father to their 23-month-old daughter, identified Velasquez as the gunman.

He said the incident happened around 3:15 p.m. after he walked to a convenience store to buy cigarettes. While walking the two-blocks it took to get to his home, the three boys followed him, asking him for cigarettes.

When he got to his destination with the teenagers still harassing him, Peterson came outside and told the boys to “get a job.”

Bailey’s friend, and employee at the convenience store, Brock Edwards, explained to WTAE in Pittsburgh, Pa., what happened next:

“The next thing you know, they just pull out a gun and shoot for no reason. It was just over a cigarette,” Edwards said. “Now, my friend lost his girlfriend — an amazing, amazing girl, and she was such a good mother, too — and now her child has to grow up without her mother being there.”

Bailey said he held the mother of his 23-month-old girl, and as she lay dying, Peterson told him that she loved him and their daughter.

“She didn’t even move when it happened,” Bailey told Channel 4 Action News’ Sheldon Ingram. “She just said, ‘I can’t feel my legs.’ She wanted to lay down, so I laid her down.”

Goosby, the youngest of the alleged suspects, is the only teenager in custody at the moment. His attorney is saying that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police are searching for the other two suspects.

We’re wondering, what’s happening to our youth?
