Another mother is mourning the loss of her son as the family of Kijuan Byrd is demanding that a strip club security guard be placed under arrest for the death of her son.
Kijuan Byrd and Michael Smathers were in a pickup truck outside Club Lexx last Friday night in Miami, when a security guard working at the club shot them as they were both unarmed. Kijuan was shot six times, while Smathers was severely wounded as he remains in critical condition.
According to Miami-Dade police the two were shot multiple times as Kijuan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smathers, 30, remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital as his sister told reporters that he is fighting for his life, and if he lives, he may be paralyzed.
Byrd was a football star at Norland High School, worked as an electrician and has a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.
His family wants to know why the security guard hasn't been arrested as he has claimed the controversial “Stand your ground” law as his reason for shooting Kijuan.
Kijuan's father, Donald Byrd said at a news conference that-
"He was my baby. He was my youngest son...He was shot twice in the back."
Kijuan’s mother, Arlene Byrd couldn’t hold back the tears as she cried for only son, saying-
"He's gone. My baby is dead, and it's senseless. I don't understand why, and I don't know what I'm going to tell my grandbabies,"
Trayvon Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump was at the family’s side telling reporters that-
"Again we are here with another stand your ground claim and another unarmed black man shot and killed and nobody arrested,"
Kijuan's family is preparing funeral arrangements and asking for answers, however a representative of the Miami-Dade Police Department said the department does not have a comment because the case is still open and police are still investigating.
This is Trayvon Martin all over again, when will the state of Florida repeal the “Stand your ground” law so that innocent people don’t get killed?
