In 1824, the name "United Mexican States," or "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," was adopted after the country became independent from Spain.  However, the extend name is only used on official documents, money and government material.  According to President Calderon, his country's name should officially be shorted because it mimic the name of the United States of America.

"Mexico doesn't need a name that emulates another country and that no one uses on a daily basis. "It's time for Mexicans to return to the beauty and simplicity of the name of our country, Mexico," Calderon said. "A name that we chant, that we sing, that makes us happy, that we identify with, that fills us with pride."

Calderon first proposed the name change to congress in 2003, however the bill was shot down before there was a voted on it.  On December 1, he will resign from Mexico's presidency whether a bill is put forward or not.
