140elect.com, which tracks the Twitter presence of presidential candidates, noticed the spike in Romney followers and launched a full investigation into the matter.

As for Romney and his camp on “Twitter-Gate,” Zac Moffatt, the Romney campaign's digital director, rejected accusations that the campaign was "buying" followers for Romney.

As for Barack Obama, he has 16 million more followers than Romney.
