It has been confirmed that the cause of death for Shain Gandee and two of his passengers was carbon monoxide poisoning.
A rep for the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying Shain’s autopsy had been completed today. The death was ruled an accident.
Shain’s uncle and a third unidentified person also died while inside Shain’s 1984 Bronco, which had stalled out in mud while the went crew off-roading over the weekend. The truck’s exhaust pipe had apparently been submerged in mud, causing the gas to leak back into the car.

The fate of MTV’s hit show “Buckwild” is unknown after the tragic death of star Shain Gandee and the recent legal problems his co star, Salwa Amin, faces.

For now, MTV has shut down the production of season two, but have provided no other details about the series as a whole.
For Gandee’s family, that means finding the money to bury him might pose a problem. According to TMZ, Gandee did not get rich off of his stint on the reality television show, and now his family is turning to the community to help with the burial costs.
Shain’s cousin, Ashley Gandee, is organizing a memorial “mud run” (an off-road trucking event) to ease the financial strain on Shain’s family in the wake of the “Buckwild” star’s death.
“I know the strain they are going through,” Ashley tells us … adding, “It’s hard to provide a proper burial. It’s already tough with the loss of family members … expenses are tough as well.”
Although police are still investigating the deaths, they have officially confirmed that Gandee was the driver in the SUV and that carbon monoxide is highly believed to have been the cause of death.
Speculation is growing that the three may have decided to keep the vehicle running with the heat on after they became stuck because the temperature was below freezing. Not realizing the muffler was blocked, carbon monoxide would have quickly built up inside the Bronco.
A third person, Donald Robert Myers, has also been indentified as one of the deceased.
