It seemed like a tough decision for Mayor Bloomberg to have to cancel the NYC Marathon this past week, but it was quite clear that the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy wasn’t going to let it happen.

While hotels have booked thousands of runners in NYC hotels, leaving no spaces for homeless Hurrican victims, rooms are now becoming vacant as the runners are checking out.

While it seemed like there would be some backlash after cancelling the marathon, it turns out the runners are staying positive and volunteering to help Hurricane victims!

Twitter user @911Buff just posted a photo of the NYC marathon runners gathering to get ready to head over to Staten Island and help out as much as possible.

Their running energy will be used plenty, and for good, as the borough is in dire need of assistance after the storm.

Jordan Meltz, a runner and sports medicine doctor, told the Associated Press:

“We initially were bummed, but also saddened by the perception that runners were indifferent to the needs of other people. We wanted to turn a negative to a positive.”

We don’t blame them for being disappointed after all of their hard word training, but we’re sure their good deed will make them feel better, plus there’s always next year, right?
