The role of transgender persons in today’s society is a debate that seems never ending. However, an Oregon high school has made it very clear that they support the transgender community by converting six bathrooms to unisex bathrooms to accommodate ten transgender students that attend the school.
Grant High School is the first school in Portland, and in the nation, to have specifically unisex bathrooms.
The school realized the change was inexpensive and needed to make transgender students feel comfortable within the school.
Vice Principal Kristyn Westphal told The Oregonian, “We just need to make sure that all students are safe and comfortable here, and they have their needs met. If they feel unsafe using the bathroom, that’s a problem.”
Just Let Her Use The Bathroom!
Oregon is no stranger to the transgender movement. In 2007, the Oregon Equality Act (SB2) which protects lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders from discrimination, was passed into law.
The changes are a relief for transgender students who experience the daily challenge of which bathroom is appropriate to use.
Transgender student, Scott Morrison, is relieved because he reportedly stopped drinking water at school to prevent the urge to use the bathroom.
