Republicans are on the attack again; this time doing all they can to shift the focus away from the fact that Money Mitt trashed “47 percent” of Americans in a leaked video earlier this week.

Mitt Romney and his conservative compadres are circulating a video of President Barack Obama speaking about “redistribution” in October 1998 as an opportunity to frame him as a socialist.

At the time, then-Senator Obama was talking about making the government more effective, however the Republican video is clipped and you hear Obama saying, “I actually believe in redistribution.”

NBC News has obtained Obama’s remarks in its entirety, in which he praises “competition” and the “marketplace.” Obama is quoted:

“I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody’s got a shot. How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities.”

The Romney campaign would do anything at this point to shift the focus away from his “47 percent” comments, even if that means manipulating a 14-year-old video of President Obama. What a shame!
