Calls for peace were heard loud and clear in Jamaica, Queens, yesterday, as thousands of community leaders gathered to march Sunday evening. The activists and concerned citizens assembled to call for an end to violence, as NYC has seen its most gun violent summer on record.

The “I Am Present For Peace” march took place in Queens at the corners of Sutphin Boulevard and 111th Avenue and marched to Baisley Housing Projects, most famously known as the childhood home of Nicki Minaj, but also has been hit by a violent streak of crime in the recent years. Russell Simmons marched side-by-side with Capt. Dennis of the Peacekeepers, Erica Ford of LIFE Camp, Congressman Greg Meeks, State Senator Malcolm Smith, State Senator Shirley Huntley, members of the Nation of Islam and thousands of community members, including many parents who have lost their children to senseless violence.
The marchers called on parents, police and local officials to work together to implement strategies in an effort to end the violence.
